Objective: Students will apply their knowledge of recognizing individual sounds in words in order to isolate the beginning or final sounds in a given word.

Procedure:

1. I will begin this lesson by explaining to students that we are going to work really hard on using our listening skills to play some really fun games. I will explain that it is very important for students to watch and listen to me very closely as I model how to use our listening skills so that we
will be able to understand how to play the games that I have planned .

2. I will then tell all of the students to listen very carefully as I say the first word that we will be working with. I will then say the word gate. I will then say to students,"What if someone told me to figure out what the very first sound in the word gate is?" Hmmm.. It would be important to say each sound in the word very, very slowly like /g/ /a/ /t/. The first sound that I hear is the /g/ sound. Let me say it once more before I decide. /g/ /a/ /t/. I still hear the /g/ sound first so I now know my answer! The /g/ sound is the first sound!

3. I will then model for students how to find the last sound in gate. I will again sound out the word gate. I will say slowly and carefully /g/ /a/ /t/. I will then say, "Hmmm...What was the very last sound that I heard?" I think it was the /t/ sound, but let me say this word slowly and carefully once more. "/g/ /a/ /t/. I will then tell them again that I heard the /t/ sound at the end of this word which means that the last sound in gate is the /t/ sound.

4. Now I will work together with students to isolate sound in words. I will point o objects in the classroom such as desks, paper, the flag, the calender, and a chair, and students will need to decide and explain what the first and last sounds of these words are.

5. I will then play a "Guess Who" type of a game with students. I will tell students that I will say the first sound of someone's name in the classroom. They will need to tell me whose name in the class that I am using. I will do the same with saying the last sound of a student's name in my class and have students decide whose name it is.
