Objective: Students will apply their knowledge of common sound in words in order to identify the common sounds found in words used in a variety of activities and games.1. I will tell students that today we are going to work on figuring out what words have in common. I will continue to explain that there are many words in our language that have the same sound such as bat, boy, big, and bin . I will explain that the sound that I hear in all of these words that is the same is the /b/ sound. I will give them another example using the words pig, pencil, partner, and panda. After saying these words out loud, I will explain that the sound that I heard in all of these words is the /p/ sound.
2. I will then say the words, dart, dig, and dirt, to students. I will then ask them to tell me what sound that they hear in all of the words.
3. I will repeat this same procedure using the words cart, cub, and candy.
4. I will do this activity once more using the words window, wag, and went.
5. Now, I will tell students that we will play a fun game. I will divide the students in my class up into teams of 3 or 4 students. I will give each group a picture of something on a card such as a barn, dinosaur, pencil, and a coat. I will review the word on the card that each group has. I will tell them that it is their job to walk around the classroom and collect objects that begin with the same sound as the first sound that they hear in the word on their picture card. (Prior to this lesson, objects beginning with the initial sounds in the words on these picture cards were scattered around the classroom to facilitate this activity.)
6. I will let each group spend 10-15 minutes collecting objects that have the same beginning sound as the word on their picture cards.
7. At the end of 10-15 minutes, I will require each group to present their picture card to the class and explain the first sound that is in this word. Each member of the group will then share one object with the class that they found that has the same initial sound as the word on the picture card. It will be the job of the rest of the students to decide if they agree or disagree with the objects collected and presented to the class.
