Rick Rottman has been doing a great job the last few months at his Bent Corner blog writing about what a crazy old coot Ron Paul is. Congressman Paul's most recent display of televised psychosis was this past weekend on Meet the Press, when, among other things, he claimed that Abraham Lincoln started the American Civil War. Lincoln apparently did this through a diabolical scheme of getting elected President of the United States, then cleverly waiting for Confederate troops in the seceded state of South Carolina to open fire on Fort Sumter. Starting a war by waiting for the other side to start the war . . . he was an evil genius, that Abe Lincoln. (Helluva wrestler, too.)

Not only did Paul blame Lincoln for starting the war, he blamed him for starting it for the noblest reason he could possibly have started it - to free the millions of African Americans enslaved throughout the southern U.S. The bloody Civil War, with its calamitous loss of life and resources, was unnecessary to end slavery, Congressman Paul said. Instead, Lincoln could have freed the slaves by having the government buy them from their owners and releasing them. Except that by the time Lincoln made it to office, the war had already started. Southern state legislatures began declaring their secession shortly after Lincoln was elected, months before he was inaugurated. I doubt they would have been receptive to offers from their most hated enemy to relieve them of their vast force of wage-free labor in exchange for fair market value. Plus, as Rick points out in his article, wouldn't buying the slaves, even if only to free them, legitimize the practice of treating human beings like livestock?

Lincoln didn't start the Civil War, and if he had, it would have been to restore the Union, not to free the slaves. He evolved into the Great Emancipator over the course of the war, but Abe was hardly an abolitionist when the shit started going down. "If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it," he wrote in 1862, "and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that."

The Texas state capitol in Austin has a statue dedicated to the confederate dead. It is close to the front gate as you enter the main walkway from the street. If your focus is on the capitol building, you may walk past it without noticing it. However, during a recent visit to the Capitol building, I stopped to look at the statue. There is an inscription written on all 4 sides. I read the side facing the walkway and was blown away by what was inscribed. There were also some other young people reading it and they stood there nodding their heads in agreement. Here is what is written on it: CONFEDERATE DEAD DIED FOR STATE RIGHTS GUARANTEED BY THE CONSTITUTION THE PEOPLE OF THE SOUTH, ANIMATED BY THE SPIRIT OF 1776, TO PRESERVE THEIR RIGHTS WITHDREW FROM THE FEDERAL COMPACT IN 1861. THE NORTH RESORTED TO COERCION. First, as a displaced northerner, I was amazed to see something like this in writing in a public place, no less than in the entrance area to the Texas State Capitol

Steve, where did you learn your history from, a comic book.?

Steve Shives, I think you're the poorly informed nut job.

I strongly encourage all of you, particularly Steve Shives, to do a little research on the civil war, the CFR, and the Federal Reserve system before discrediting the views of Ron Paul and his supporters with asinine arguments like the CFR can't be evil because Barbara Walters and Jimmy Carter are members. Read what Ron Paul has to say instead of focusing on useless nonsense like Abraham Lincoln and Jacobs' bravery. Arguing that Lincoln didn't "start" the war is only semantics. The Confederacy took several forts including Fort Sumter because they were in newly seceded states. This aggression led to the war, but Lincoln himself made the decision to start the war. PLEASE do some research and stop getting your information from short-winded biased journalists.

Thanks for reminding me about that, A.E. Yeah, Val Venis has actually been a relatively outspoken libertarian for quite a few years. It's a shame he was never a better worker. Then I might take his endorsement more seriously.

Don't forget, Val Venis supports him! You know, that wrestler that plays a porn star? Heck yeah.

I checked Ron Paul's professional background. We all know that every politician has done at least one illegal stock trade or colluded with someone at the corporate level in some way, at least one time, if not many times. But if Ron Paul has, he's done a masterful job of hiding it. Even in his private practice as an OB/GYN, he has delivered over 4000 babies...and performed several of them without the patient paying a dime! No wonder they say he's crazy. And no wonder he's not a multi-millionaire like John Edwards or Mitt Romney. He should at least talk to Hillary Clinton about investing in cattle futures. I went on to Ron Paul's political record. I just knew that I'd find dozens of flip-flops on important issues. After all, no politician can survive the establishment without selling out his true principles. It was only a few months ago that John "We must protect our borders" McCain, was trying to push an amnesty bill for illegal immigrants down our throat. It's certainly no secret th

Folks, I really need your help. We've got to find some dirt on Ron Paul and find it fast. The primaries are quickly approaching. I've carefully searched Ron Paul's personal background. Can you believe this guy has been married only once? And, that he's been married to that same woman for 50 years? Surely there must have been numerous affairs during that time, but I've been unable to find a single instance of it. I've listened to quite a few interviews with his wife (hoping to detect a chink in his armor) but all she does is blather on and on about what a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather he is. She fawns over his impeccable integrity and how he would make such a great president. Give me a break, Ms. Paul. What could you possibly know about men? She should probably talk to Rudy Guliani's wife..er...mistress...er...whatever. I checked Ron Paul's professional background. We all know that every politician has done at least one illegal stock trade or colluded with someone at th

Shanika, who said it wasn't skewed? It's my opinion. Of course it's skewed. I skewed the hell out of it all the time I was writing it. And I know Lincoln didn't care about slaves, and that lots of people think he fought the Civil War only to free them. That still doesn't mean Lincoln intentionally started the war, or that he could have ended slavery any other way once he made it to office.

Hell, the fact that you and Paul still insist that HE started the war shows that you are just blatantly out of touch with reality.

There's a substantial difference between a willing to think outside the norm, and an obsession that leads you to be unsatisfied if your conclusions match it.

Posted on 12/28/2007 at 1:12:08 PM

Gee, this isn't skewed. Nazi contributors? How could you stoop so low? Who gives a @#%$ if a KKK member wants to contribute money to a candidate. That doesn't mean Paul endorses the guy's cause. That's ridiculous. Second, Paul didn't call the vet a coward. He simply made an astute observation that Jacobs, like most folks doesn't want to hear things that deviate from what he/they have known to be the norm their entire lives. Abraham didn't care about slaves, but there are plenty of folks who to this day, think he started the Civil War to free them. Paul's questioning of our history books and their accuracy hardly makes him a nut job. His willingness to question the majority is what makes him so appealing to us thinkers here in America.

Great article. Ron Paul should be able to use all that money his campaign collected to improve his mental health.
