Indianapolis is truly a family friendly city, with some of the best attractions for children, parents and grandparents to be found anywhere. Home of the Heartland Film festival (which shows only films which are inspirational or geared towards families), the city boasts one of the top Children's Museums in the country.

Here are some favorite picks for New Year's Eve events which should appeal to the entire family.

Some are free, others a bit more costly. All are family favorites of ours.

Safe family pick number one: just before nightfall, visit the Monon Trail for a free workout or hike, a casual stroll or a busy run, your choice.

The Monon Trail is a special gem in Indianapolis, extending all the way from 10th street on the south end to Carmel on the north end, up to 146th street. We've used this trail many times when visiting the area and it is absolutely free to family and friends. We even know of someone who built a home near there to have access to the trail! While free, it is advised that families be aware of weather conditions and dress accordingly.

Even in snowy weather, you'll see families, walking, jogging or biking along the trail. Pets are welcome, preferably leashed. Do use common sense and tell family members to pay heed to those running behind or near them. No point in starting the night with an accident.

Check this out to get an idea of the location and length of the trail.

Hours of operation: Open 24 hours a day but it is safest to use during normal daylight hours.

Helpful info: Restrooms and water can be found at 64th, 91st and 96th streets. Roller blading is allowed on the trail and some people even bring along strollers and wagons for the youngest children to use.

Don't miss: the chance to catch a spectacular view of the White River, just north of the The Art League in Broad Ripple and the 64th Street Area.

Safe family pick number two: walking Around the quaint village of Broad Ripple.
