Clay
Pottery Wheel
Water
Bucket
Board
Plastics
Clay trimming tools
A heart shape can be made from any bowl shape you have thrown on the wheel. To do this craft you must be able to throw a bowl on the wheel. If you have not progressed to that stage yet, it would be better use of your time to learn how to throw a bowl first.
Now, once you have thrown your bowl on the wheel head, while it is still wet you are ready to transform it into a heart.
Place two fingers at the top of the bowl. The top will be the point farthest from you while you are sitting at the wheel..
Place one finger at the bottom of the bowl, the closest area of the bowl to you while you are sitting at the wheel.
Pull away from you with your two fingers at the top of the bowl. At the same time pull towards you with one finger at the bottom of the bowl.
This is the first step to forming the heart on the wheel. It will gently get your wet clay into the shape of the heart, but is by no means the finshed heart shaped bowl.
Now, remove your hands. Use your fingers from both hands to gently form the bottom tip of the heart. Dip your fingers in water. Gently press your hands on the clay, about an inch or so up fro thru tip you started.
Left fingers on the left side of the tip and right fingers on the right side of the tip. Pull towards you while gently pressing in.
This will press the clay into a small tip to form the base of the heart. Repeat this pulling as many times as needed to form a tip.
To finish the top two humps of the heart shaped bowl you want to gently put on finger form your right hand inside the right hump. Gently push out and round thru hump.
Repeat on the left hump using yoru right finger.
When the humps are rounded you will want to press gently from the outside to form the crevice between the two humps.
Repeat this process shaping the clay until your heart shaped bowl is finshed.
Use a wire cutter to cut the heart shaped pottery bowl off the wheel.
