I've Sponsored 12 Children in the Last Few Years and it was the Best Thing I've Ever Done

If you're like me and maybe don't really want children, but you'd still like that connection and the feeling you're helping a child, a great compromise is to 'Sponsor a Child.'. There are many charitable organizations you can do this through, all of whom offer different monthly prices and different areas of the world to choose children from. And yes, that's correct - you can usually choose the child you sponsor.

Over the last seven years, I have sponsored 11 children from many areas of the world. I sponsored two children from Thailand, because that's where I live. I also sponsored five children from various African countries, one from Vietnam, one from Guatemala, one from Brazil and one from Ecuador. I sponsored through several different charitable agencies, but these are my favorites.

Christian Children's Fund (CCF). First of all, I'm not Christian and would never sponsor through an organization that provided services for poor kids only if they were forced to have Christian teachings. Christian Children's Fund doesn't do this. It provides poor children with an education no matter what religion they are, and it doesn't force any religious views or teachings on them. CCF was my favorite organization to sponsor through.

CCF presently charges $24 a month. For that, the child you choose gets an education, basic health care, nutritious food and their community gets things like clean water, help with building houses, new schools and a whole lot more.

To sponsor a child, go to their website at Christian Children's Fund and look through the photographs of the children available. They have sponsorships available in 31 countries including Vietnam, Brazil, Kenya and many other places, so there's bound to be a child in a country you're interested in.

Children International. (CI). Children International has slightly cheaper sponsorships available at $22 a month. They work in 11 countries. I sponsored my first sponsored child through them in Guatemala and it was a wonderful experience. They also allow you to send packages to your child and take photographs of the child with the gifts you send, which was wonderful to see.

Takeaways
  • You can help a child for as little as $22 a month.
  • Sponsoring a child gives it healthcare, food, and an education.
  • These agencies operate in more than 80 coutntries worldwide.
Did You Know?
The organizations I chose to sponsor through do not force their sponsored children to be educated as a Christian. I will not sponsor through organizations like Worldvision, whose main goal is to convert poor kids to Christianity.

Thanks for the information Fabletoo. Iv been looking for a good foundation to sponsor at. I decided to go with Children's International first. This is my first time sponsoring a child, If all goes well I might donate from another organization like the Christian Children fund. Thanks for helping me decide.

And I was in fundraising for non-profits for years. The organizations I sponsor thru spend less than 20% on overhead. If an organization spends 60% on overhead - RUN, RUN AWAY. And I won't sponsor thru churches. Too many require the child to be 'converted' to Christianity. Wouldn't touch an organization like that with a 10 foot pole! Good for you sending items direct though. I do that thru CCF, Children's International etc.

Justretired, yes of course the money goes into a general fund. There's no point helping one specific child if the community isn't helped. When I went to visit my child thru CCF Thailand, CCF had built a school in her village (which had only 50 children in it and NO school before CCF came along), had put clean running water in many houses, a septic tank in my sponsored kids house, paid for healthcare when she was sick etc. Just giving the child $22 a month wouldn't help much, but helping the village does.

Trouble is a lot of the sites mentioned use the money not for a specific child but for a general fund. We found this out AFTER sposoring one for 4 years - we'd send the extra money they asked for on birthdays and other holidays but when we asked for a chance to mail things directly to the child (and their family) we were told that was not the way it worked. So, my wife and and did a lot of digging and IF you find one that allows one on one contact - through the mail, not through their center you have found a rare one. They also "give" the same child to multiple doners!! And then most of them took around 60% of the money raised for "expenses" and wages!! When we traveled through some of the poorer nations, we make an effort to talk directly with some of the churches and/or childrens homes to find ways to help directly. From that we have been able to send toys and supplies that we know will help and NO wages or expenses are paid!

This is an excellent idea and a timely article! We have sponsored children through World Vision. It's a wonderful family project too. Many sponsoring organizations will allow sponsor families to send notes, pictures, kids' drawings and even small personal gifts to sponsored children.

We not only sponsored one but adopted a child from another country. Sponsorship is an excellent way to help, nice article!
