Are you searching for your next family pet? The Humane Society might be your first stop for a cat or dog, but did you know many shelters carry a variety of pets including rabbits, hamsters and birds?

If it's time to add another creature to your family, please consider checking your local phone book for humane societies, animal shelters, animal control facilities and pet specific rescue groups. Although your first instinct may be to run to the local pet store, take a moment to check your local adoption agencies for your next pet. These animals need homes too, and are often a forgotten option.

During a trip to my local animal control center, a local government run facility, I was surprised to learn that they not only adopted out cats, dogs, kittens and puppies, but they also has several other pets looking for good homes. Since government controlled animal agencies usually have a hand in upholding local animal cruelty laws, they often end up providing for pets of all types that have been seized from cruel pet owners and conditions or from those who violate local city ordinances. All of these pets need homes, and are often overlooked as an option.

I have personally seen large macaw parrots, rabbits, hamsters, tortoises and horses available for adoption through my local shelters. And, since many of these creatures were once pets in a home environment with human contact, they make excellent pets. Not all animals at local shelters are animals that have been found running the streets. But, don't be surprised if your new pet is timid or shy at first. After all, they are adjusting to a new environment, schedule, food and human contact.

I didn't realize that many of these places offer other animals either, until I began searching for my lost cat. I found many agencies in my area I didn't know exisited that offered horses and birds as well as dogs and cats. I was happily surprised. Thanks for informing others of this valuable info. It is always great when we can save even one animal.

Great information. It hadn't occurred to me that little animals like hamsters would wind up there, too.
