Tourism from the mainland to Hawaii is booming, and next year interisland travel will be made all the more simple and convenient with the launching of Hawaii Superferry.  In July of 2007, Hawaii Superferry will begin daily ferry service from the island of Oahu to Maui and Kauai.  In 2009, Hawaii Superferry will also connect Oahu to the Big Island of Hawaii.  For tourists and residents alike, this should come as exciting news.  Finally, an affordable, convenient, and fun way to island hop.

Here in Hawaii, residents have been hearing news of the vision that is Hawaii Superferry since 2001.  Founded by three Hawaii businessmen with backgrounds in sea and air transportation, Hawaii Superferry has designed vessels to operate in Hawaii seas.  According to press releases, the vessels will be fuel efficient and ecologically friendly.  

According to Hawaii Superferry, passengers will enjoy a cruise-like experience aboard their vessels.  Hawaii Superferry is expected to boost tourism, aid small businesses, and produce revenue for the state.  Residents of Hawaii will be able to travel interisland more easily and more frequently, with the luxury of bringing along their own cars, luggage, and even pets.

Fares for Hawaii Superferry's interisland travel will be more reasonable than present interisland airfares.  Passengers traveling between Oahu and Maui or Oahu and Kauai will pay a one-way advance purchase web fare between $42 and $52 depending on whether they choose peak or off-peak hours to travel.  Parents will pay only $15 for children under 2 years old.  Vehicles less than 16 feet long and under 8 feet high will cost between $55 and $65.  Travel between Oahu and the Big Island will be slightly more expensive.
