Adderall xr has made my 13 year old daughter unstable and depresed

Sandy J - I am also looking for an alternative for Adderall XR. My son is 6 and was recently diagnosed with ADHD. I have tried the diet thing, counseling and then meds. Adderall 5mg was the first and the most affective. However, when they upped him to 10mg he had side affects of mania and talking about dead people and skeletons as if they were real for the first couple of hours of administration. The affects for the ADHD were perfect but I can't have my 6 yr old w/ mania and halucinating as the doctor said he was. We also tried Metadate 10mg, then needed to be upped again which was 20mg, headaches came everyday and we saw no real affects to help him. Now Stratera, he is becoming very moody and snapping at me, not like him at all. It's starting to feel hopeless but I know I have to keep trying to help him. While in school, he even noticed the difference, he told me the medicine was working anymore and he didn't know why.

The only ADD medication I know of that does has major health risks is Concerta which was orignally designed as an anti-depressent but was not certified for that purpose due to a higher percentage of suicides in the treatment group than the control group when it was being studied. I only know about that becuase I used to be on Concerta untill it made me depressed and I was switched to Adderall and ever since than I've had no problems. Hope this helps.

hat they won't be hungry and may eat considerablly less than normal. This isn't cause for alarm, its normal and will go away after a day or two; if it doesn't, talk to the prescriping physician. Your child may also feel "different" not in a bad or good way, but in a very indifferent way. It can be a very infuriating feeling at time, but after a day or two of taking it, the feeling will pass. These side effects that are prominate when taking the medicince after not taking it for a few days and when initally prescribed are important reasons to make sure that your child takes it every day the way they're supposed to, be it a school day, weekend, break, or the summer. Everything I've said is from my own personal experience. I do not know all the indepth medical aspects of it, but I've tried to educate myself about it since I take it. To the best of my understanding, there are no major health (physicall or mental) risks associated with it. The only ADD medication I know of that does has m

Sandy J, I've been perscribed adderall since I was in 10th grade (I'm currently in college) and it definatly is effective at controlling ADD. You don't need to find a safe alternative to adderall for your child; adderall is safe, you just need to be informed so you can keep your child safe from the largest risk that goes with taking it, which is people who will either try to buy it or steal it. But this is easy to protect against. Talk with your child and let them know that there is a market for it for abuse (to the extent that is age appropriate) and make sure they know its something that they shouldn't tell anyone that they have or take it. Also, adderall comes in short acting pills and time release (Adderall Xr), the Adderall Xr is not abusable (so the risk from people trying to get it from your child is diminished) and it only needs to be taken once a day. When they first begin taking it (or after any time that they haven't taken it for a few days) there is a large chance t

Lori - Your son DEFINITELY knew what he was doing; if I were you I'd check up on him and see what other drugs he's been into. There are tons of people out there making a ton of money selling adderall on the street. Maybe you need to raise his allowance so he doesn't feel the need to buy, disperse, or take drugs.
