Edwards Rising in Polls in Iowa: Addresses Caucus-goers in Davenport

John Edwards, accompanied by wife Elizabeth and daughter Cate, came to Davenport, Iowa's Putnam Museum and IMAX Theater on Friday, December 28th to rally caucus troops and, hopefully, sway a few more undecided Iowa caucus voters to cast their votes for him. Using Bruce Springsteen's "The Rising" (appropriately) as his closing campaign song, Edwards had some good news to share with some 200 likely Iowa voters.

A poll taken by the Lee Enterprises newspapers (publishers of the Davenport, Iowa, QuadCity Times, among other papers), released to supporters at 8:10 p.m. on the 28th, with six days left until the January 3rd Iowa caucuses, showed Edwards moving into the lead, jumping 5 points in 2 weeks. Edwards and Obama--- (who was appearing at nearly the same time across town in Davenport's River Center)---hold 29% tied leads in the race, with Hillary Clinton at 28%, and 19% of Democratic caucus-goers still undecided.

Two other polls appearing on the NPR News Blog are also good news for Edwards. One poll conducted of 600 likely Iowa voters by Strategic Vision, on December 26 and 27, gave Obama the lead with 30%, Clinton hanging in with 29% and Edwards 28%. A Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll showed Clinton at 29%, Obama and Edwards both at 26%. The Big News, however, was whom voters would pick for their second choice. According to the NPR polls, Edwards would pick up Biden and Richardson people and was "second choice" for 23% of caucus-goers. Dodd supporters were split between Edwards and Clinton. [In the Iowa caucus process, if a candidate's supporters do not have 15% of the vote, those voters must join another standard-bearer's group, and it appears that Edwards is in the best position to benefit.]

These "dead heat on a merry-go-round" caucus polls were the backdrop for the discussion of the issues that Edwards has been addressing in repeated town hall meetings for the past year or more. A new twist was added to Edwards' rally remarks, however, by the December 27th assassination of Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan after an election rally in Rowalpindi.

Go John Go. While the republicans are fixated on Senator Clinton and trying to make excuses for Huckabee Hound (where's is Hollywood Fred anyway?), John Edwards, the lone true Liberal, is going to win the election.

I still think the Democrats are fixated upon Billary Clinton and nothing will shake them loose. The candidates with the most statecraft and domestic government experience (Dodd and Biden) are sucking wind in the polls.

I'm glad Edwards is against Bush's tax cut. The richest section of the US got the cut and meanwhile tens of millions of needy people go without or greatly reduced funding of social program such as medicaid, medicare, afterschool programs, pre school programs, etc. Less revenue coming in means less money for social needs.

Well done.

Hi Connie, I'm a John Edwards fan so this was good news. I'm e-mailing your article to my Democratic friends. Congratulations on your featured article.

Did not notice that was you in the picture with Edwards until seeing it on the showcase this morning and stopped back to say: WOW! Lucky you. If I had not stopped back to say that I would not have seen the comment from Michael K. Miller. I say to Mr. Miller, I leave it to the young to turn things around in the next 20 years, because I doubt I have 20 future years ahead of me. I have been doing little things for the past 20 years, tho' to help improve the environment and lessen the use of fossil based fuel energy. I can not say I live a 100% green lifestyle, but every effort is like a snowflake when enough other snowflakes are out there.

I'm sticking to my conviction that the democratic ticket for 08 should and will be Edwards /Obama

Not a fan of Edwards at all. As far as I'm aware, he believes that anyone making over $100k a year is "wealthy" and wants to increase their taxes. Liberals...bah.

Good job, Connie. Thank you. This Presidential Election will - not may, will - determine what America is in 20 years. And that's all we - Christi, Alyce, you, I, and millions of other Americans - have: 20 years to turn it around. Although framed from a Florida perspective, see *"Believe Nationally - When in the Course of Human Events" at http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/371929/believe_nationally_when_in_the_course.html

I would like to see mandatory solar panels for all new construction. Offshore wind (whatchamacallits) mills were not allowed in Mass. and yet they have them in California without adverse effects. I like Obama's idea to use corn to create biodiesel fuels and at the same time creating new jobs. He says we already import the corn to countries that are doing exactly that. I do not think the choice is between oil/natural gas and nuclear power when the sun and wind methods are already being used by green livers.
