The Gorean Lifestyle: A Woman's Right is Slave

Why Goreans Believe Women Only Exist to Please Men

What is your name and identity? If you're a woman practicing a Gorean lifestyle, you don't have one. You identity is kajira, a slave, and you serve a master, who orders you to do whatever he pleases. You have no rights and never address yourself as "I" or "me" - instead, you address
yourself as "master's slave". Refusal to do this results in punishment, usually a whipping. Would it surprise you that many women in America today practice this lifestyle willingly? This is a sobering look into the sexualized lifestyle of Gor: Gor's bookish beginnings, why Goreans think slavery is necessary, living as a Gorean slave, and the controversy surrounding it, including stories of abuse and death.

How Gor Started
In 1967 John Norman (real name John Frederick Lange Jr.) released a book called Tarnsman of Gor, a book detailing life on Gor and its inhabitants. This turned into a series with 26 books in print today, called Chronicles of Gor. His books are carefully detailed that explain everything from Gorean food to Gorean rituals, and focus on adventures in Gor and the natural role of genders. Gorean philosophy believes that men have a natural drive to dominate women; women have a strong desire to submit to men and give up their rights. Women are either free or enslaved, but free women can be enslaved at any time.

Philosophy of Gorean Slavery
Here is Gorean philosophy concerning slavery of women:

- As stated before, Goreans believe that women have a natural desire to be slaves. Every woman has this desire.
- Also, they believe that women have a huge desire to please men. They strive for perfection. They want to be submissive. Women want to be controlled by men. A man's word is final.
- Gor strictly believes in the 'natural order'. There aren't any exceptions to this rule. Men always dominate, women always submit.
- All women 'beg the collar' (desire a master). Women slaves are collared once owned and beg to be owned, according to Gorean philosophy. Here is an excerpt from Marauders of Gor explaining this view:

The author of this article do not seam to have any grasp on the subject she is discussing. First of all most Gorean slave girls do not speak in third person, secondly a slave very much have an identity, a Gorean slave is not a mindless drone. The author also seam to have no grasp on the role of the free woman. A free woman do not obey every man, and while she have a lover rank to say it like that than a free man she is treasured and honored for a free woman is the wife, sister and mother of Gorean men. As for family in the books men took free women as their wives or free companions and raised families with them. In real life, it is true that many alternative lifestyle couples chooses not to have children, but I know of several Gorean families that are rather normal, the only difference is that the parties involved call one another companion instead of husband or wife. Now as for slaves, is it possible to end up with the wrong kind of Master? To find someone who is abusive, off co

The writer of this article does not know enough on the subject to make the judgements she has made. Perhaps if she did more research on the subject, or if she actually met more than just a handful of people in this area, then she might be more informed on the subject. And she can claim it wasn't about real life, but her article speaks volumes about her intent.

For years I have read the Gor Chronicles and found them to be fascinating but never something to live my life by. If people want to engage in Gorean roleplay, that is their choice. However, Gorean philosophy pertains to GOR not to Earth(Urth). And NOT all women are submissive by nature...there are in fact, women many in number who would find the role of a Gorean Free Woman more interesting to that of a Gorean slave.

I roleplay in a gorean realm from time to time. Thats it though. To me its a nice fantasy land kind of like dungeons and dragons just with harsher rules. The books were cool too just different from mainstream. I don't live a gorean lifestyle but if consenting adults are willing to or want to who are we to force our beliefs onto them? This was a very good write up Ann!

Also the man you mentioned in Darlington, (Lee Thompson is his name) He got some of his ideas from the Gor series but he does not identify himself as being Gorean, in fact he calls his group Kaotian.

You really should have clarified that your article is just about how Goreans live on Gor (in the books) Im sure that is not the true reason behind your article. If it was, then why did you bring up people who live a Gorean lifestyle, then compare them to some of the laws and ways of life in the books? Yes I identify myself as being Gorean because I live by the philosophies learned from the books, Honor, Respect, Love, Truth, Life, etc. For your knowledge and that of your readers, you do not need a slave or even be a slave to be Gorean. In fact, in the books only about 3% of the female population are slaves. So not every woman submits or needs to submit. The people who have read and posted in disbelief to your erroneous article without even questioning your background or the extent of your knowledge of the subject; you need to learn that knowledge not fought for is not earned. If you really want to know the truth about Gor you should read all the books yourself. Also the man you mention

hmmm. Well, I personally find the gor novels poorly written, and misogynistic. I think it's norman's own personal wankfest. Being someone who myself is A. Female B. Submissive C. Owned BUT most definitely NOT Gorean, I feel that I can make this assessment without having leveled at me: "Whaaa you don't understand submissive females." If people want to play act Gor, that's just fine, but...the books themselves are misogynistic travesties and I'm not the only person in a complete power exchange relationship that thinks so. The only book I find more violent and stupidly offensive is the bible.

If you switch the word Gorean and Klingon, I do not think you would be too for off the mark

Now, most women in a city are free, they have honor and respect as they are members of families who have earned honor for performing necessary caste work and building a good reputation. The free women are the pride of the city, they are highly valued, because they are the mothers, they do the cooking, laundry, house work, raise the children, etc. All vital to the city and honored work. Because they are seen as so valuable, they are to wear veils and birkas like Islamic women, the highest caste women are kept hidden away behind walled gardens attended to by female slaves only. No man who lives in a city would dare enslave a free woman of his own city. The other cities women however are taken freely, because other cities are seen as the enemy, the people treated almost like the castless. Now slaves are criminals, those stripped of caste/honor, and captives from other cities. (Also women who submit to men because slaves can be shameless and sexually expressive as free women can not.
