How to Stay Focused on the Task at Hand

While doing something important, it is essential to stay focused and not let your attention wander. If you are like most people then you might definitely find your attention wandering off and not staying in one place after some time. So what do you do in such cases where you really really need to focus hard but your mind is not co-operating?

Just to help you, below are a few tips. Try them out and see which works best for you. Some tips might work better for a few and some others might work better for other people. So experiment and pick out your favorite:

1. Do One Thing At a Single Time:
Many people try to multi-task, doing multiple things at a time. This will lead to a lot of confusion. It is much better to focus on one task at a time. Set aside a specific amount of time for a task, say 15 minutes or half hour or 1 hour etc. Devote that time solely for doing 1 work and nothing else. Refuse to do any other work during that time you have set for 1 task. This way you are likely to do that work with more concentration than trying to do many things at once.

2. Do Something As If For the First Time: I really like this technique, its a very good one to try out. Regard every task that you are doing as if you are doing it for the first time ever in your life. Even if you have done a similar thing 100 times in the past, still pretend that you are doing it for the first time ever.

Whenever we do something new, we pay a lot of attention to it. We are careful while doing it and try to observe and learn as much as possible. We pay lot of attention to small details.

Once we start doing something on a regular basis, we stop paying as much attention to it as in the beginning. So this technique helps us to focus again on what we are doing even though we might have done it a thousand times earlier.

3. Uncluttering Your Mind By Writing: While performing an important task, what if some other problem comes to your mind and starts worrying you? If this happens, then a good technique to clear your mind from the worries is to write down whatever problem or concern is worrying you so that you will not forget it and can deal with it after you finish your task.
