Toys and Tiring Your Kids Can Help Make Traveling Easy

Since our flight was long, I packed extra toys in my luggage and rotated the toys in the carry-on to spice things up. In South America, dinners typically last over two hours, so these toys also helped entertain when we
weren't traveling. Below I list 11 toys that saved my sanity, more than once. When choosing a travel toy, keep in mind size and weight - the more you can fit the better!

Top Choices for Toys When Flying With A Toddler:

1) Bring Along Thomas foldable playset by Tomy (www.tomy.com.)
2) Matchbox and other die cast vehicles
3) Crayons and paper
4) Crayola Color Wonder markers and learning books
5) Small containers of playdough and 5-6 shape cutters
6) Fisher Price Doodle Pro Doodle Talker (www.fisher-price.com.)
7) Wind-up Toys
8) My First Mobile Phone by I-Play
9) "Sticker Stories" books, published by Grosset & Dunlap
10) Tolo Toys Rainbow Stacker (www.tolotoys.com.)
11) Balloons

A year later, I can report with fond memories that my trip with my toddler was a success. When all was said, we went on ten different flights, crossed into Argentina on three separate boat and two bus rides, road horseback, and endured countless hours of rental car driving. The success of my trip was due, in large part, to all of the extra hands - having two doting grandparents along provided endless help and relief. But all of my prior preparation helped too. Hopefully, after reading some of my tips, you too can travel successfully with your toddler.

I am flying to ny next month your article was very helpful...thank you
I have traveled several times by myself with our now 2.5 year old, and all the tips in the article are right on. Treats and bribes will not destroy a routine, and they are lifesavers. Another tips I read somewhere (and I wish I'd know when we had a crying toddler with an ear infection on an overnight plane from Hawaii...3 hours of screaming...I'm sorry if any of you were on the flight), bring some gift cards (if traveling domestic...Starbucks etc. for $5-10 each) or some treats (if traveling internationally...small amounts of local chocolate/coffee etc) and hand out to those around you at the end of a painful flight. Who can stay mad over that?
Excellent tips! I fly with my 2 & 5 year old tomorrow & I'm about to go pack the "fun" bag! Wish me luck.
Wow, you are a genius! Thank you for being so kind to share your ideas and experiences. I am feeling better about traveling with my 2 year old!
We're flying internationally with our toddler in a week. While I'd thought of a lot of these ideas, I appreciated your tips and will definately be using some of them.
THANK YOU so much for posting this. my son and i are only traveling from Austin, Tx to LA, Ca - and we've made the trip before, but he was just a baby then. he'll be 16.5 months old for this trip (during the holidays! eek!) and I've been SCARED! lol But your tips are all so wonderful and logical. I feel much better after reading your article. Thank you again!!
Great article!
You are a great writer. I hate fly fishing though haha. Check out my sports articles!
We hope to take a trip by plane this summer when our son will be about 22 months. I am bookmarking this so I can read up on it then! Thanks!
i just recently travelled to the phils last august with my 22 mos old toddler, and i was so lucky to have read the content of this article to be able to test the effectivity of Dr Bach rescue remedy drops for my son. boy! it sure did the magic trick. he slept at least 8 hrs (12-16 hr flight)not that im in favor of drugging my son, but to keep my sanity and nerves at bay since my son is a very hyperactive baby.what kept my son occupied during the trip back here in LA after he woke up was a toy airplane that i bought fr duty free shop @ the airport for $50 ( i didnt mind paying since this is really priceless (",) ps: melatonin works wonder as tested by a cousin of mine when she went home to phils from st louis, MO just recently.
