Will Benazir Bhutto's Assassination Cause Time to Wait to Pick the Person of the Year?

It has also disturbed me that Time Magazine decides who will be their Person of the Year before the year is even out. This year it is especially egregious. After all, is there anybody outside of the offices of Time Magazine who honestly thinks that the person who did most to impact the
world in 2007 was Vladimir Putin? Only time will tell, of course, if only Time could tell the future. Frankly, I'm doubtful. One thing is for sure, however; as of today it is quite clear that Benazir Bhutto had a far larger impact on geopolitics in 2007 than Vladimir Putin.

For that reason, I do hereby declare Time Magazine's choice of Vladimir Putin as their Person of the Year null and void. Obviously, I have no say in the matter, but had I some say I could have spared Time their embarrasment to at least a certain degree. I would have nominated Al Gore for obvious reasons, Nancy Pelosi for having the power to change the world and not using it, or Steve Jobs for changing the face of how media is delivered. And then I would argued strongly for Osama Bin Laden since, over six years since 9/11, he is still the one person responsible for every single decision made by the Bush White House. I would not have nominated Benazir Bhutto because I would expect her to be the leading candidate next year. Of course, that cannot happen now. But, if the final decision had not been made until December 31, 2007 it is clear who the only person deserving of the now-dubious honor would be.

I agree with you that Time should have seen the handwriting on the wall and given Bhutto her due as Person of the Year as I also mentioned in a comment before. While everybody had hopes that somehow she'd dodge a bullet...it was really a matter of time, unfortunately, on her impending death at the hand of unseen (or seen) powers-that-be. Time not recognizing that really shows their slippage as an outstanding source of putting the world in perspective. Yes, I'm also still confused over why Putin was made Person of the Year when his significance (painfully one of probable nefarious actions) will likely come later on. If nothing else, Time should put out a letter from the editor and say they were just being satirical. And then seeing a tape of editors singing "Putin on the Ritz" would just make it--even though, you know, that satire thing is always misunderstood. ;)

Are you responsible for this headline? Or am I just overly suspicious because of my own recent headline switching fiasco?

Tim, while I agree Bhutto deserved consideration, I'm not as negative on the choice of Putin. For the long term, what he has done to turn Russia around will have lasting ramifications beyond even what happened with Benazir Bhutto. I myself thought it would go to Gore, simply because he is on such a roll. But Putin as a choice does make sense.
