Across the world there has become an ever increasing cognitive dissonance over the issue of Aids and specifically its transmission through anal sex. This point can be illustrated by viewing a set of three articles, all in relation to AIDS. The first deals with heterosexual anal intercourse, the next on the transmission of AIDS and lastly on anal sex in Africa. Although they all stress different opinions, ranging from anal sex being stigmatized to it being the reason for AIDS, the underlying message that they all transmit is the same; there is a lack of information about anal sex, AIDS and its transmission which is a more prominent factor in the increase in AIDS cases then anything else, especially homosexuality which commonly comes to mind first. It is this lack of information which leads to the ignorance about anal sex (the history behind it, % of current practitioners and their sexual preferences, how it's related to health) that ultimately results in spreading the AIDS epidemic, particularly so in Africa. The first is a general overview of the concepts/findings.
According to "AIDS and Heterosexual Anal Intercourse" from the Archives of Sexual Behavior by Voeller, anal sex is, and has been, one of the most taboo subjects in both Western culture and medicine and science. The article stresses that despite becoming a more frequent practice among heterosexual men and women and ever though anal intercourse is more frequently practiced among heterosexual couples than homosexual or bisexual men, education on the topic continues to be taboo and ignored which is what creates the negativity focused on anal sex and it particular its transmission of AIDS.
