School is about to start once again, and if your child had a rough year for 2006 then you are probably looking to improve for the upcoming school year. One way that you can accomplish this is by taking the time to teach them good study skills. You can begin by starting before beginning the school year. You will want to create a good comfortable study area for this. If your child does not have one already then you may want to invest in a good desk with all of the supplies they will need. Nowadays it seems like all kids need a computer in order to complete their homework. If you are concerned about having a computer in your child’s room, you can just have them use yours when they need to. Puting a computer in their room may do the opposite of encouraging them to study. The only additional tools that they will need other than the desk, is a lamp, some pencils, a few notebooks, a calculator, erasers, glue, scissors, and whatever additional items you can come up with.
Once you have all of the supplies that your child will need you need to begin giving them practice assignments during the summer months. It does not have to be for a long period of time, maybe about a half hour a day. Even if it is just them sitting their reading a book and writing down the main points of the story. This will get their minds working and get them into the habit of studying. Be warned that at first they will definitely not like the idea very much. But you will have to hold your ground. The earlier you start this type of practice sessions the easier it will be for them adapt. As the parent you will need to stress the importance of studying, and how much it will help them in the long run. A few rules that you will want to keep in mind is to never make your child study when they are hungry. They will have a hard time concentrating. Also make sure that you offer them help whenever the may need it.
