I thought I might be able to refrain from the "year-end" top 10/ year in review/ best insert noun of the year list phenomena. I promise not to do it next year (Can anyone say top 10 broken promises of 2008?) So, I decided I to revisit some memorable quotes from the year and what they meant to me.

"Don't Tase Me, Bro," college student used it seeking to stop campus police from throwing him out of a speech by Sen. John Kerry. Okay, can anyone say publicity stunt. Further investigation revealed that the student had given the camera to another student himself. Andy Warhol said "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes." Well, this kid got way more than that. Hey, maybe Kerry should have gotten himself tased during his last run for president?

While it is no secret that beauty and brains do not go hand-in-hand, a contestant in the Miss Teen America pageant set the women's movement back 50 years. This young lady, who should avoid public speaking as a career objective, was asked why one-fifth of Americans are unable to locate the United States on a map. Her response:

"I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because some people out there in our nation don't have maps and I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and Iraq and everywhere like such as and I believe that they should our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S. or should help South Africa and should help Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future for us." So much for President Bush's Education Initiative, this is one child that clearly should have been left behind.

Best 2007 quotes I have read thus far. I wonder if it is true that 1/5th of Americans can not find the USA on a map. Does that include all the American continents and countries or just US citizens. Assume it means just US citizens so wonder would that include from age 1 day old to the opposite end of the spectrum, the elderly with Alzheimer's disease. Read recently about the high number of California students that can not locate the Pacific Ocean on a map. Then again if Miss Teen America shows the level of today's students education, perhaps the numbers are accurate.
