Expected to Cost Between 50 and 70 Dollars for Converters - Coupons Help Defray Costs

Here's the latest info but you'd better pick up the phone and start dialing quickly if you want to get any credit towards a converter (some of the restrictions and rules will be briefly described here). I
f you don't watch tv or aren't going to care about watching tv after February 2009, you can stop reading right now. Otherwise, here's info on how to get partial credit on the cost of conversion, particularly if you still own a tv with a rabbit's ear antenna. A surprising number of households still do!

The Bottom Line: You may be able to get a free $40 coupon - or even two of them - towards the expected $50-$70 cost of converting an old tv to the new digital format. Without it, you won't be able to see tv, unless you know someone with a workaround hack or solution.

They started taking calls today on a first come basis for coupons to get partial reimbursement for conversion. All households in the USA are eligible. . I tried calling yesterday and was told to call back on January first. The number? 1-888-338-2009. If that doesn't work (last minute changes always possible) go to this website:

www.ntia.doc.gov/dtvcoupon/DTVarticle1.html

You'll see all the info.

The catch?
First come, first served. If you want the free credit and dollars in your pocket, it pays to move quickly. Spread the word to family and friends. I'm doing so right now.

If you miss the deadline, you can still check out that website for places that sell converters. Hope this helps.

I'm glad I don't watch television. I wonder how soon we will need it here. I live on an island in the middle of nowhere, so I imagine they will continue to do things the old-fashioned way for quite some time.

Timely and well done article!

My sister gave me a heads up on this just yesterday! Good job.

P.S. I highly recommend checking out Janice's article as there are clickable links that go beyond the info I provided. I wanted to get my article up quickly so some people might actually get the credit before they ran out of coupons but Janice did a better job, I think, with her layout and the links. :)

I rarely watch tv as I have Tivo and so I skip commercials and watch only select shows. Most I simply don't find worth viewing all the way through with rare exceptions. I prefer reading and writing. One point - I do know some people who are bedridden and not readers. They often listen to tv or tv news or can see well enough to enjoy television so it can be a sort of lifeline for them, especially if they don't have lots of family or friends left. Sad, but true.

Great article! I did one yesterday on this subject too. I am happy that they are helping consumers to get at least a little bit of a discount if they have to buy a converter box.
