The Joyful Smiles and Heartbreaking Tears

If you are thinking about becoming a vet tech maybe my experiences in this line of work can give you some real world insight to this career.

I am an animal lover and I had never even considered working at an animal clinic until one day I was given the opportunity to do just that. I had stopped by my local vet to pick up a bottle of vitamin
s for my dog and I walked up to the counter to tell the receptionist what I needed and the owner's wife was there that day and just out of the blue, she asked me if I was still searching for a job and asked me if I had ever considered working at an animal clinic. I told her that I had not thought about it, but that I would be very interested in doing so. She then said to me, walk through that door and grab a lab coat and let's put you to work. I remember being so excited about being able to play with all the animals

I was a bundle of nerves that very first day because I had no idea what I was doing. The first thing I got to do my first day was bathing a litter of black Labrador puppies. There were fifteen all together. Everything was going quite well over the next several days and then I had to bathe my first cat. As soon as I took the cat from his carrier and placed him in the tub, he shot up the side of the bathtub like a torpedo and went running into the other room and I had to chase this terrified cat and place him back in the bath tub that he wanted no part of. By the time I did get the bath done, my arms had so many scratches on them that they looked as if I had fell onto a barbwire fence.

No one had taken the time to show me the proper way to bathe a cat, so my first experience doing so was as traumatic for me as it was for the cat. Don't let the thought of having to bath an animal that wants no part of it intimidate you, because you will be taught several methods to ease any fears you may encounter while bathing an animal. After I had been working there for a week, I learned within that time period how to handle animals properly for bathing. There are several methods to properly hold any animal and you can choose which ever method makes you feel the most comfortable.

Excellent article! I couldn't handle the sickness and worse that comes with the job. I highly respect those who can!

As an equino-o-phile, I have often thought this would be a super career tangent!

Excellent information for anyone thinking about this profession. It wouldn't be for me, but there are other options for those who can't stomach the job. I enjoy helping animals in other ways. A person can walk dogs at the shelter, play with the cats and give them the attention they need, etc. Great article!

Interesting article. I am amazed by how you ended up with this job in the first place. You just never know what doors will open when you least expect it. Your advice is very sound. Animal lovers will, of course, gravitate to a career such as this, but they must be prepared. I think the workers in animal clinics not only comfort the animals, but also the owners. Upon the loss of a beloved pet, our family was treated with so much sympathy and compassion by the entire staff.
