The results of the latest Iowa straw poll conducted by the Des Moines Register as of Tuesday January 1, 2008:

Barack Obama: 32%
Hillary Clinton 25%
John Edwards 24%

According to the Iowa newspaper, Obama's surge in the polls is due in large part to new first time voters who are planning on voting this year for him. Obama has also picked up many of the independent voters for the Iowa caucus.

Despite the results of the survey, the Iowa Caucus will certainly be extremely close on January 3. Whoever wins the Iowa cause from the Democratic and Republican party will receive an expected 5% to 10% boost in the polls for the New Hampshire primary, scheduled for January 9.

The Super Tuesday states on February 5 is another major campaign primary day that will determine the presidential race and leave one candidate standing among each political party.
