Uncommon Dog Breeds: The Polish Lowland Sheepdog

A product of Poland, the Lowland Sheepdog has been around since the 1500s, and was used for both herding and hunting. Although its exact origins remain undocumented, historians believe the Lowlander is a descendant of Hungarian corded herding dogs. As with most European breeds, World War II brought the Lowlander to the brink of extinction. Dedicated enthusiasts revived it's population shortly after. While relatively rare, more and more Lowlanders are being seen in the fields of competitive obedience, tracking, agility, and as therapy dogs.

The Lowlander has a slightly arched skull, and a long muzzle which comes to a gradual stop. The ears are medium sized, and lay far back on the head. Their eyes are large, oval-shaped, and hazel in color. The sheepdog bears a calm, friendly expression. The neck is long, wile the body is elongated and rangy in appearance. The tail is lengthy, however some pups are born bob-tailed. Docking is becoming increasingly popular. This dogs coat is very long and dense, and comes in all colors.

Cheerful, vivacious, and alert the Lowlander excels as a companion animal. It has an easy going temperament, and gets along with just about everyone. They lavish their owners with affection. These dogs tend to be reserved around people they don't know, and will bark any time something enters their territory. The Lowlander is a natural watch dog.

Intelligent, this character is easy to train, and possesses a good memory. Teach a Lowlander something once, and it sticks for life. These are very responsive animals which excel at competitive obedience. Although they are eager to please, if the Lowlander doesn't understand what the trainer is trying to teach it, it may display a stubborn streak. It does best with consistent, and firm training techniques. Independent minded, and slightly serious this dog has a solid work ethic, and likes thinking for itself.
