It is hard to turn around without hearing the health benefits of a daily dosage of fiber. Compared to the health benefits that the world's most popular grain, the whole wheat, provides, there are many other forgotten whole grains to fulfill your healthy wholesome lifestyle.

Whole grains have taken many turns in the American diet over the last few centuries. For instance, a mere ten years ago, everyone was on a "whole-wheat" craze requiring people to eat copious amounts of whole grains to increase energy through the large amounts of fiber that was needed to energize the human body. The diet calmed down and was abruptly stopped with the introduction of the Atkins Diet. The Atkins Diet was created by Robert Atkins, M.D. which stated that to a healthier lifestyle people should eat low-carbohydrate filled foods and should eat only high-protein foods such as red meats, leaving behind whole-grains. Sadly, the end of the popularity of this diet became controversial when the inventor died of a heart attack. Since that time in 2003, scientists have uncovered more information about the need for good carbohydrates that are found in whole grains.

There are many tribulations when taking up a fiber-enriched diet, but the major one is an unsatisfied taste bud. A person can seriously get tired from just eating oatmeal and whole wheat pastries or cereal. Your taste buds deserve more options and the world has to offer many choices that have been forgotten throughout the passage of time. Today, many ancient foods left behind have started to make a grand comeback by professional chefs and health fanatics. Here are some of the most popular ones on the market today:

Very interesting article. Just as different grains are important, so are heirloom seeds, which can give us so many different tastes.

I prefer the taste of whole grain bread, for example, to white. Excellent article!

Quinoa and steel cut oats are our favorites - I've never seen "pre-washed" quinoa sold anywhere, and it is bitter if you don't rinse it first. I've never seen a "grey" coating - but the one time my wife forgot to rinse it, we knew it with the first bite. Delicious and much more nutritious than rice! Thanks for bringing needed attention to these.

This is helpful times 10. My doctor has stated that I need to incorporate more fiber into my diet for health purposes that I don't need to go into but this is great information. Thanks.

Interesting! I saw that Chef Ramsey was using a few of these on BBC. Thanks for helping me understand how to use them myself in the kitchen, such a great help!
