If you think losing 10 pounds in one week is a crash diet you are definitely right. Crash diets of this nature are unhealthy. Losing so much weight over such a short period can leave you feeling sick and tired. It is much more reasonable to make your goal of losing 10 pounds over a longer period of time.

Crash dieting is not only unhealthy but it is detrimental to whatever goals you set. When losing weight with a crash diet the majority of people end up gaining the weight back in a short period of time. Many even gain more weight back than they originally lost. Many people on crash diets actually have a hard time losing the extra pounds and there are many reasons for this.

Stored fat is the chief culprit why we carry those extra pounds with us. Crash diets give the illusion of weight loss. It's really the water weight and muscle that is being lost. The fat clings on, as a matter of fact the body thinks it's being starved and goes into survival mode to prevent this. It begins to store fat to see it through the imagined hard times ahead. It lets the water and muscle go pretty easily but hangs on to the fat and won't let go until there's no other choice.

The body is not the only one battling this drastic weight loss; the mind also joins in the fight. When the body is deprived of food the cravings begin and the mind fully supports the bodies' needs. These urges are so great that as soon as food becomes available again we tend to eat everything we can lay our hands on. This is when the bathroom scale reads higher and higher every time it's used. The body wants back what it lost. This is why people gain the weight back plus a few extra pounds after the crash diet. They begin to eat more than they did before going on the crash diet and the extra eating becomes habit and the habit becomes pounds. Why? The body and the mind are back in control.
