I love to involve my children with the family meal preparation. Depending on their age each child can be involved. From measuring ingredients to peeling and dicing, children can be active team players, reserving the peeling and dicing for older ones, of course. Even a toddler can be helped to measure a spoonful of sugar or a tablespoon of flour and will feel very accomplished doing so. My own daughter could crack eggs into a cake mix before she was walking. She loves to cook and now makes up original recipes of her own. She has learned to be flexible in cooking and not be limited by following recipes to the tee. I do not have to worry that she will not be able to fend for herself when she gets her first place out in the big world.
She leaned her cooking skills by working in the kitchen as a family team player. She is also learning to take a role in household tasks by doing her part in meal preparation.
