Named after its place of origin, the Podenco Canario is commonly referred to as the Canary Islands Hound. Despite its name, this breed has been in this region for less than 500 years. Its ancestors were found along the Iberian coast, and were introduced to the area by Mediterranean traders. The hound was taken on rabbit hunts where it would display an unusual hunting technique. The hounds would run in packs, using both hearing and scenting abilities to track down their prey. Once the quarry was found, the group of dogs would point, wait for the hunters signal, and then retrieve the game. Today's Canario is still taken out on the hunt, however it is becoming increasingly common to see these canines in role of family pet. Canarios have round skulls, with an elongated profile. This breed has large, bat like ears which stand erect . They have extremely keen hearing ability. Their muzzle is lengthy, and gradually tapers off to an gentle point. Almond shaped eyes are set far apart on the head, and are usually an amber hue. The Canario sports an intelligent, alert expression. The neck is slender, and long. The overall body structure is fine boned, lean, and lithe. Its tail is lengthy, and whip like. Their coat is short, and sleek. It is usually a rust-orange or golden white. Light markings are common.
These dignified characters are intelligent, inquisitive, and loyal to their family unit. The Canario does well with children and animals it was raised with. These dogs have keen hunting instincts, and will take off after small game. For this reason, the hound should be kept leashed in urban areas.
The Canario should never be kept in an apartment. It has high energy levels, and needs to be vigorously exercised. These dogs make good jogging companions as they possess a lot of stamina. Training these dogs requires a competent handler who has a fair, yet firm manner. The Canario will ignore anyone who is insecure or hesitant.
