Around since antiquity, the Greenland Dog is a direct descendant of wolves which traversed the Siberian tundra. Local tribes captured, and then bred domesticated specimens which gradually evolved into today's Greenland Dog. Used for sled pulling, guarding, and as a watchdog, this breed played a crucial role in providing their owners with mobile transport. Unfortunately, with the advance of technology, the need for sled dogs diminished, so the Greenlander's population began to decline. Although breeders have attempted to revive this breed, their numbers remain scarce. This dog is extremely rare outside its home country, so many enthusiasts find themselves importing the pups directly from Greenland.

The Greenland Dog has a broad skull, and average muzzle which comes to an abrupt stop. Their almond shaped eyes tend to be dark in color, and sport a lively expression. Ears are set far apart on the head, and stand erect. The neck is short and sturdy, while the body is moderately long, and well proportioned. Legs are of average length, and well muscled, while its feet are large, thickly furred, with large pads. The Greenlander has a permanent set of snow boots which help it gain traction while pulling a sled, while simultaneously protecting it from the cold extremes of its natural environment. The coat comes in nearly all color variations, and there is no definite standard. Their fur is dense, long, and well insulated.

Aloof, intelligent, and loyal, the Greenlander is a one man dog. These canines are boisterous, and playful with other dogs, but may not be overly demonstrative in their affections towards their human family. The reason for this is linked to its past. Dogs used in teams would develop close ties with one another, and were rarely given the opportunity to bond with their driver. Nevertheless, these dogs make even tempered family pets which do well with children and other animals.
