Beginning September 1st, pirates and spaceship captains, Klingons and Storm Troopers, will be hanging out together with thousands of other characters, famous and near-famous actors, authors, and ordinary people at the Hilton, The Marriott, and the Hyatt in downtown Atlanta. Every age from babies to octogenerians, every gender, every species..

Yes, it's time for DragonCon again.

Nowhere else and at no other time are so many people trying to cram so much to do in four days.

They will be attending workshop and seminars on writing, comic book art, ghosthunting, forensics, and a host of other topics.

They will lining up around the building to see their favorite actors from Firefly, Star Trek, or Star Wars. This year's guests include George Takei, who played Sulu on Star Trek, and Anthony Daniels, the ever-charming owner of the voice of C3PO.

They will be chatting with NASA officials, authors (Anne McCaffrey! Peter S. Beagle!), comic book artists, special effects artists..

They will be lining up for autographs, lining up for photographs, and believe me, lining up to buy, buy, buy in the Dealers' Room, Art Room, and Exhibit Hall.

There is nothing like the exuberant, overwhelming, experience of DragonCon. Nowhere else can you step so entirely out of your everyday world and into somewhere..else.

Tickets are available from Ticketmaster for pickup in the Grand Hall at the Hyatt Regency, or you may buy tickets for one, two, three, or all four days at the door. There will be a long line, so come early!

Alternatively, volunteers are still needed for registration and security. (DragonCon is run almost entirely by volunteer staff, and always has been.) First time volunteers pay $20 for the entire weekend, and are expected to work 20 hours over the 4 days of the Convention.

The need for volunteers in Security and Registration was based on requests posted in the last two weeks on DragonCon's MySpace and Live Journal spaces. The StarTrek track and Computer Gaming also posted requests. StarTrek has some special provisions in addition to the normal requests, however.

The last paragraph is accurate. Here are the volunteer rules from the DragonCon website: "All staff, from the Chairman on down, are volunteer. No-one at Dragon*Con receives any hourly compensation for time worked, etc. The sole exception to this is our office staff, who work year-round doing data entry and answering the phone, etc. at our office. (Usually just one Staff Member, two right before the con.) Continuing Dragon*Con Volunteer Staff Members receive a complimentary membership to the convention. First-time staff are generally required to pay a one-time-only fee of $20. This fee can be waived at the discretion of the Chairman only under extraordinary extenuating circumstances. As a Volunteer Staff Member you'll be expected to work twenty hours during the Convention, generally in four-hour shifts. You can request certain times to work and certain times to be available (to attend panels, performances, etc.). Your area director will make every effort to grant your reques

Does anyone edit what's published here? There are several glaring typos and problematic grammar throughout this story. The fact checking is less than desirable as well. McCaffrey is not a guest this year, Anthony Daniels is more than just the "voice of" C3PO, and the entire last paragraph is very misleading. Sorry.

I've just beome aware that Anne McCaffrey regrettably will not be at the Con this year.
