Bacterial infections continue to be a leading cause of health concern and account for billions of dollars in healthcare services each year. If you suffer from a bacterial infection, it is important to understand the health risks associated with antibiotic use and work with your physician to determine the best antibiotic for your health complication.

When considering antibiotic options, ask your physician about the FDA approved drug known as minocycline. Provided by Watson Laboratories, Inc., minocycline is becoming more commonly prescribed in the treatment of resistant bacterial infections and to reduce the development of drug-resistant bacterial infections.

While minocycline can be prescribed for any variety of bacterial infections, it is highly recommended for patients who suffer from respiratory infections caused by Haemophilus influenzae, patients with Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and even respiratory complications attributed to pneumonia.

As a prescription drug that must be taken around the time of meals, the use of minocycline often poses some confusion for patients. To the benefit of patients, however, the use of minocycline is effective in both children and adults. For children over the age of 8, the dosing of minocycline is recommended at 12 hour intervals and is dosed based on the weight of the child. In adults, the recommended dosing is also recommended at 12 hour intervals with an initial dose of 200 milligrams followed by 100 milligram doses. As a general rule, the use of minocycline is limited to no more than five days. In some patients, however, lower doses may be used for as long as eight weeks.
