In communities across the United States, public health services are offering more and more services to the homeless. From shelter, clothing and food services to services that involve resource and referrals to civic organizations and employment, homeless individuals are offered more support than ever before.

Recognizing homelessness is strongly correlated with alcohol and substance abuse, many organizations and outreach services focus on not only providing the essential life sustaining needs to the homeless, but are also beginning to offer more and more services designed to rehabilitate the homeless from a life of alcohol and substance abuse.

If you are involved in an outreach program for the homeless, it is important to understand how your outreach organization will offer support services to the homeless. More specifically, it is the focus on not only providing substance abuse recovery services but how that service will be delivered and made accessible to the homeless. In many cases, to be successful in the homeless shelter, the program may need to provide a transitional drug recovery or detoxification outlet, providing shelter and protection for three to five days. Following this transitional housing and support, the homeless individual can be referred to traditional homeless shelter accommodations and resources.

By engaging in transitional housing, the outreach services in your community can offer a more focused care to those who are addicted to drugs and alcohol. With this focused care, especially during the period of withdrawal, there is a far greater outcome in terms of transition to the traditional homeless environment. In addition, for those homeless individuals who are not involved in substance abuse recovery, the pause between admissions provides for a healthier and peaceful environment.
