Who will win the Iowa caucuses? Tonight's the night! It's now-or-never time for the Democratic and Republican candidates for the Presidency, as they face-off against each other in the Iowa caucuses on January 3rd, tonight, doors opening at 6:30 p.m. (CDT).

As someone who has followed the candidates around the state, met most of them, had photo ops with at least 4 of them (see Associated Content), I'm going to venture far out on the proverbial limb and "pick" the winners AND tell you why I feel this way.

The fact that NO ONE feels secure in picking this year should tell you something about how foolhardy this act may be, but here are my picks and why I am picking the race this way.

First, for the Democrats: Obama will win but Edwards will be an extremely close second, so close that it could (literally) go either way. Obama is banking on a high turnout from young voters, first-time voters, disaffected Republicans and Independents. Information from the Center for Information & Research in Civic Learning & Engagement says there will be a high turnout (the weather is good) and that there will be record numbers of Independents and Republicans voting Democratic in the caucuses.

The Des Moines Register has predicted that as many as 72% of voters may be first-time voters this year. Do you see a trend here? And, if you do, who(m) would it favor?

A high voter turn-out of voters under 34 for Obama will help him capture first place tonight. Many of those voters will be Independents who have registered as Democrats in protest of the current Administration, and there will be disaffected Republican voters present in the Democratic ranks, as well. After all, look at the choices that their own party has put before them. Where, in years of yore and in the last caucuses, in particular, the average voter's age was over 50, tonight the torch will be passed to a new generation.

Impressive, Edwards eeked out #2 over Clinton, as Connie predicted. I'm very surprised. Obama won as expected, but I'm not sold that youths had that much to do with it. I saw interesting reports that young voter turnout tripled, which sounds intriguing. But it tripled from 4% to 13%. 65,000 youth in a caucus with 335,000 voters, that's only 19%. (http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20080104005377&newsLang=en). For your Republican predictions, what you predicted for Iowa will probably come true for New Hampshire. I expect your Romney/McCain battle, just a bit later than expected.

Excellent work, Connie! As for Huckabee, I thought the Iowan Republicans would be more sophisticated than that. I realize they have a weak pool of candidates. But, Huckabee, with his utter lack of understanding (or concern) about foreign policy, and his wildly insane beliefs about the earth having formed 6,000 years ago, is without a doubt the worst (and most frightening) of the lot. By the way, I look forward to Scott Schlimmer returning to post his congratulations for your Democratic predictions. Don't mind him - he likes to talk out of his own...blank, most of the time.

Very good predicting. Senator Barack Obama : 37.58%, Senator John Edwards : 29.75%, Senator Hillary Clinton : 29.47%, Governor Bill Richardson : 2.11% and Senator Joe Biden : 0.93%. I was thinking about you as I watched the caucus returns being tallied. The Republican online "billboard" would not load. It was amazing to watch Obama's numbers go up and later surpass both Edwards & Clinton, because at first it was Edwards on top and Obama/Clinton seemingly tied. Speaking of the youth vote, one of Obama's precinct leaders is an 89 year old lady.

A year ago I predicted that Obama would win the Iowa Caucus. My next great prediction, the Democratic ticket for 2008: Obama and Edwards www.myspace.com/mccartyzone

I forgot that Edwards did so well in Iowa in 2004. Should be interesting!

It's a nice thought, but there are only 5 states older than Iowa. Don't count on young people to turn the election. There literally aren't enough of them. And I'd be floored if Edwards beat Clinton in Iowa. I'd say you've based that on very flimsy reasoning, and I think that prediction will be wildly off. Not to worry, if you're correct on that prediction, I'll be back soon to post my congratulations on the impressive prediction. For now though, you're in the realm of yeah it was a good article but you might as well pull predictions out of your...blank...Now I'm very curious to see though! Good luck to Edwards, young people, and Obama!
