As a boy in the local barber shop, the process always ended with the barber doing a little something that made me feel more like a man and less like the 12-year-old boy I was. He got some hot white lather out of an Oster machine, applied it to the upper sides of my face, and, with a straight-edged razor, which he sharpened with a couple of quick swipes back and for the on the leather strop attached to the Theo A. Koch chair, he proceeded to trim my sideburns.

I don't know if they really needed any trimming or not - but I sure did like the way it felt. The splash of After Shave with a quick pat on the cheeks and a dab of Dixie Peach pomade on the front of my "Flat top" signaled the end of my 75-cent bi-weekly moment of manhood.

Some years later, when I began to develop the need to shave random hairs off of my face, I used what most boys go to first - What my father used. It was an aerosol can of either Barbasol or Colgate. I missed the heat of the lather Eli (my barber) used and found that my own efforts did not give me any of the pleasurable sensations of having it done to me.

The aerosol lather was cold and less lubricating. I blamed it for the many times I nicked myself with a basic 'safety razor.'

By the time I was 16, I had tried a bunch of electric shavers or many designs. Straight edge (Remington style) and circular bladed (Norelco types). None did the job for me. They just couldn't (and still, to this day) can't cut my whiskers satisfactorily.

I then tried EDGE after seeing an early TV commercial for it. Problem was, it felt like sissy stuff. What real man would use jelly on his face? The fact that it was a better lubricant than those white foam aerosols was completely lost in the muddled priorities and values running around in my adolescent pre-frontal lobes.

Ultimately, I solved the problem in my early 20's by growing a beard and using whatever was available to trim my cheeks and neck when the mood or special occasions struck. For a number of years (in the 1960's, of course) I used a n old fashioned shaving mug and brush. It actually made the aerosol cans feel pretty tacky by comparison, but it still wasn't quite the right thing for me and my face.

Takeaways
  • Not hot lather from the old Oster, but VERY good!
  • Gel is swell.

On my bathroom counter sits a can of Edge shave gel. You know, the kind with Cooling Conditioners. Now Edge and I go way back, so we're pretty comfortable around each other. On said can are two sentences that I guess I never noticed before now. This is where we begin our journey. Tonight, while faithfully following the steps used in my 33 years on this planet to complete Transaction #2, I was dealt a relationship blow... "You want ultimate closeness and ultimate comfort with your next shave?" Uh huh, I do, that's why I picked you up off the shelf, purchased you with my hard earned money and brought you home with me my sweet little black can of blue gel. Do you remember that? You and me and deodorant and toothbrush, what a great drive that was. "The solution is in your hand." Are you sure? I mean really, really sure? I've never been one to doubt you sexy little black can, but I've been around a while and I was unaware that there was a use for toilet paper beyond what I co

Great story and review David. I've been using Edge and triple blades for years, and rarely cut myself. I used to use my Father's shaving mug and brush during the 70's...during my Mother Earth News, "back to the land" period...although those dreams and the mug and brush are long gone, I'm still shaving;) I am considering a stache and beard again though. During the 70's it would grow sort of under my chin...not sure what it would do now.

Hey David, sometimes Edge gel and sometimes Colgate foam and sometimes soap and water and when that's not around once or twice even a dab of shampoo if that's all I can find. Now shavers are a different story; I can't stand single blade shavers and electric razors are out of the question. Great article.

Nice review, David! I'll never forget my first experience shaving---I was 15, and it was with an electric razor. Still though, going through that rite of passage was absolutely memorable.

My husband also used to love Edge. He has since discovered the new Gillette gel and he likes that a lot better, even though it is more expensive. It lasts quite a while as well. He bought a tube of it and had it for about a year before needing to buy another. Like you used to, I personally prefer the old-fashioned shaving soap with the mug, straight razor and brush. I'm just not very modern when it comes to a lot of things :)
