A History of the Weekend
Enjoy your weekend? Consider yourself lucky because for most of civilization the idea of two days of leisure would have been considered a sin at worst and an indication of dangerous sloth at best. In the western world the idea of a weekend was mostly confined to the one day variety, as in Sunday. Sunday was considered a day of rest, of course, in concert with the Judeo/Christian Bible which states that God rested on the seventh day after spending the first six creating the universe. This idea of taking Sunday off from work has been fundamental to western society in one way or another for a few millennia. The Catholic Church actually prohibited any work on Sunday except for work done in the name of celebrating the glory of God. This allowed priests to oversee church services, obviously, but also was intended to cover such things as helping a neighbor rebuild a fence or tending to the sick or needy.
