You probably have one in your home right now. An ugly terra cotta flower pot that's crying out for embellishment. These pots look so primitive and bare with their rough finish and bland, terra cotta color. Fortunately, you can change all of that. Even if you have no artistic talent, you can decorate a flower pot and give it new fresh status in your home. Here's how to transform that ugly terra cotta flower pot into a one of a kind piece of home décor:

How to decorate a flower pot: Give your flower pot a base color to build on.

To paint your flower pot to match the décor of any room, sand away any rough spots using 100 grit sand paper. Once you have a nice smooth surface, apply several coats of spray acrylic sealer to the inside of the pot, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next one. Do this only if you don't plan on placing a plant in the pot. To paint the outside, base color, apply two coats of acrylic paint with a soft brush from your craft store. Another option is to use acrylic spray paint in a well ventilated area. Now that you've eliminated that dull, terra cotta color, your terra cotta flower pot should already look more presentable..

How to decorate a flower pot: Add more color.

After applying the base coat, paint your terra cotta pot with interesting, abstract designs using acrylic paint. Try painting the rim a contrasting color or add big, bold polka dots to give your pot character. Apply masking tape in lines around your pot and spray on a contrasting color of paint to give funky stripes. Choose colors that coordinate with other items in your home. Get adventurous and use stencils from your craft store to paint on fun designs and unusual shapes. Use masking tape to tape strategic areas, add a second color, and then peel off the tape to reveal a new design. When you're satisfied with your final design, apply three coats of spray acrylic sealer to preserve your artwork.

We used to do this regularly. I had begun making a little village of pots, starting with a flower shop, etc.

My kids and I have decorated some beautiful flower pots. Unfortunately, a few got ruined when we potted a plant. Wish I had had your suggestion about the acrylic sealer! Useful tips.
