Few property owners allow renters to paint, and even when they do, the renter must paint the home back to a neutral color before they move. Since painting is generally out of the question, and plain walls are boring, renters are always looking for ways to add color to their home. Here are some ways to add color to your rental apartment without painting.

Bookshelves can bring color to your room. While bookcases generally come in subtle wood tones, or whites, what you display on your bookshelves can really add color to your room. You can display a collection of colored bottles, add brilliant vases or pottery, or just paint the bookshelves any color you choose.

Windowless Window Treatments: Window treatments come in so many wonderful colors and textures. You can find sheer window treatments, heavy luxurious window treatments, and simple and clean designs as well. Some are actually true works of art. Why only use them on windows? You can install window treatments on an entire wall where there is no window for an instant accent wall. You can install a wall of window treatments behind your headboard, or in place of a headboard. You can install window treatments to cluttered bookcases to hide your mess and brighten up your room.

Oversized Art Canvases: You can add large blocks of color by painting art canvases in your favorite colors. You can even use the colors from your furniture by picking out two or three colors from your sofa and having the paint store mix quarts for you. Then paint each canvas a different one of these colors. If you are a bit artistic or adventurous, try making an abstract of your own design. After hanging these canvases, you will not even notice the plain wall anymore.

Lighting: You can put colored bulbs in track lighting or picture lighting and shine it directly at your wall. This will give plain white walls new life and also double as great mood lighting.
