First Ladies have had a special place in the hearts and minds of American's since Martha Washington and Abigail Adams. From the outspokenness of Eleanor Roosevelt to the iconic fashion statements of Jacqueline Kennedy's all the way to Hillary Clinton's push for a public role in making policy decisions. The role of First Lady is special because they are not elected but can have a significant influence and insight with their President husbands. Even though a day can mean a year in political fortunes and today's front runner could be tomorrow's has been, here is a sampling of some of the possible first ladies:

Mrs. Michelle Obama

Mrs. Obama was born 1964 on Chicago's South Side.. After high school she went on to Princeton University graduating with a B.A. in sociology and a minor in African American studies. Mrs. Obama continued her education and earned a degree at Harvard Law School in 1988. Mrs. Obama met her future husband, Barack, while working for the Chicago law firm, Sidley and Austin.

Mrs. Obama began working with University of Chicago in 1996 as an associate dean of student services, and then as executive director of community and external affairs until 2005, when she was appointed vice president of community and external affairs at the University of Chicago Medical.

While candidate Barack is busy campaigning, Michelle does her part by working and taking care of their two daughters Malia, 9, and Sasha, 6.

Former President Bill Clinton

I think most of my readers would remember Bill. Back in the peaceful, ignorance is bliss 90's, he was the 42nd President of the United States. Since leaving office in 2001, President Clinton has enjoyed much success in Fund-raising on the world stage for hunger, AIDS research, and Tsunami Relief. If Senator Clinton is elected as the first female President, former President Clinton would be take on a historic role as the First Spouse. While the first lady normally occupies the East Wing of the White House and is responsible for the social calendar, former President Clinton would obviously act as a very close adviser to Mrs. Clinton insomuch that he has already had the job for eight years.
