Back in art school, one of our instructors listed a cheap tackle box under our list of required supplies. He explained to us that a tackle box was one of the best storage systems on the market for artists, and he was absolutely right. Those individual compartments turned out to be perfect for holding tubes of paint, conte crayons, charcoals, paint brushes and more, and kept our supplies neatly organized and easy to find. They were also easy to carry, easy to stash in a locker and practically indestructible.

I still have my old art school tackle box, and since then, and purchased a dozen more for all sorts of practical uses around the house. You might be amazed at the many alternate uses for a cheap tackle box.

Kid's craft box

For kids who craft, paint model airplanes or War Craft figurines, or tinker around with electricity and construction toys, a tackle box is a perfect tote for containing all those tiny parts and containers of paint.

The plastic bait trays have the advantage of preventing spilled paint from oozing all over the contents. The snap shut latch also prevents the contents from spilling to the floor in case of a fall. The carrying handle makes it very easy to carry, plus the compact size is easy to store on a closet shelf or under the bed.

Tool box

For homemakers, a tackle box makes a great tool kit and tends to be slightly cheaper than a "real" tool box.

I keep a pair of pliers, an adjustable screwdriver, tape measure, and a hammer in my tackle box. In the trays are an assortment of different types and sizes of nails, screws, bolts, picture wire, picture hangers, hooks, and other odds and ends for minor do-it-yourself tasks around the house.

Garden tote

For gardeners, a tackle box is a terrific way to organize gardening supplies such as hand tools, gloves, twine, stakes, seed packets, and more.

Sometimes it's best to find storage containers that aren't used for their intended purposes. It saves a lot of money! Great ideas!
