Christopher Paolini - An Infamous Name in Fantasy Literature

Christopher Paolini's story is one that has inspired respect and hatred and combinations of both in epic fantasy readers. He started writing the first of the Inheritance Trilogy at 15 years of age, eventually selling it door to door. In 2002, Eragon, the first of the Inheritance Trilogy,
was privately published by his parents. Paolini toured over one hundred schools and libraries, discussing reading and writing, dressed in interesting pseudo-medieval attire, fitting of Alagaesia, the world the Inheritance Trilogy is set in.

During one of Paolini's tours, he gave a speech at the school of Carl Hiaasen's stepson. Carl Hiaasen, himself a journalist and writer, heard about the book, and told Knopf, his publisher, about Paolini and his book. Knopf made an offer on Eragon and the rest of the Inheritance Trilogy (though only Eragon was completed at the time of the offer). Eragon was published by Knopf after more editing in August of 2003. A movie adaptation of Eragon is to be in theatres on December 15th this year.

Paolini, regarding his books, has said, "In my writing, I strive for a lyrical beauty somewhere between Tolkien at his best and Seamus Heaney's translation of Beowulf".This quotation has inspired the fury of thousands; Paolini even suggesting that he compares himself to 'Tolkien at his best' incites the users on writing forums all across the internet to scorn Paolini, often starting long discussions, threads of a dozen pages or more, in some cases I've seen. Personally, I think that that quote is a bit much.

Christopher Paolini disgusts me. He doesn't have an original idea in his head. It was marketing that has earned him a following, not skill. They claim he was only fifteen when he wrote it, but in fact he was nineteen when it was published, so he doesn't have the excuse of naivety.

well i think it's quite obvious that he copied a number of things from a number of different saga's, i mean come on the Dragon riders? there is and has already been a large saga called the Dragon Riders of Pern, i mean he so obviously stole that idea it makes me sick, i mean i might as well write book with a wizard named harry and call it something different, thats basically what paolini did. but as far as copying from Tolkien and C.S. Lewis goes, well thats a little different, those two men basically began chidrens fantasy, and everyone who has written a fantasy novel since has more than likley read those books and were inspired by them. J.K. Rowling is a huge copycat of Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, i mean come on *He Who Must not be Named*? thats straight from Tolkien, more than once time in the lord of the rings ive read Sauron being called *He Who must not be Named*, Centaurs in the forest? thats straight from C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia. so what im trying to say is,

Paolini steals from about every story and is proud of it. So what if he is only 15; I wonder how much cussing Tolkien would yell at Paolini if he was alive? Add a Comment Posted on 05/31/2008 at 8:05:49 PM The plot line from Star Wars, names from Lord of the Rings, True Name idea from The Wizard of Earthsea. He can't write anything original and his plagiarism is so bad that he could probably lose a lawsuit. Paolini probably thought that if he put in dragons his story would be unique, but it's not. Dude's got to get a life and stop being published for being a crazed fanboy. Nobody appreciates plagiarism.

wow. for someone at th age of 18 to compare himself to Tolkien can in no way shape or form be accurate. Tolkien was in World War I, Tolkien was well learned in language and northern European mythologies, Tolkien also wrote his work over his entire lifetime, Paolini has written his over a few years, Tolkien was a professor at Oxford, Paolini is still a kid, Tolkien faced obstacles from his who thought his works were terrible and without plot or drama and utterly pointless. When Tolkien could have been spending time working and developing ideas in his field of Anglo-Saxon, he was spending time writing his stories of Arda, which to his peers seemed pointless. Tolkien had many life experiences which fuel his verse and prose, and give it life and beauty. For someone so young to compare themselves to someone whose work was developed and changed and differed over nearly sixty years doesn't make sense to me.
