"I just don't think I should dress in a way that brings attention on myself" said Stacy, as she looked down on her plain jumper and adjusted her head covering.

"Look at that woman over there; she's not leaving much to the imagination. How can guys help but look at her?" she continued.

Stacy had a point. As Christian women, it is important to dress in such a way that the focus is not on self, and with modesty and propriety so that men aren't unnecessarily tempted. But without even realizing it, Stacy's statements revealed a prideful, self-focused heart. To some degree, she was guilty of the very things she claimed to shun.

It's not wrong for a woman to dress in modest, plain apparel if that is what her personal convictions and particular church tradition demands. But plain dress is not always a sign of a pure heart.

Unless a woman's personal convictions dictate otherwise, it's okay for women to wear modest clothing that is also attractive and fashionable. Admittedly, today that can be a challenge. It's not always easy to find fashionable clothing that is also modest. If you don't believe me, try taking a teenage girl to the mall! It can be a frustrating experience, but with persistence, and after rejecting heaps of clothing that shows too much skin, my teenaged daughter and I often come home with shopping bags full of clothing she loves, and of which my husband and I approve.

The bottom line is that it's important to honor God in how we as women dress. For some, that may mean wearing plain clothing, and for others, it may mean wearing lots of color and accessories. It's good to remember that the most important piece of "clothing" a woman can wear is a heart that seeks to honor God.

A Christian Woman's Guide to Modesty: Don't Cause Your Brother to Stumble

It's no secret that men look at women. It's also no secret that women at times dress in such a way that almost demands the lustful attention of the men around them.

Takeaways
  • Focus on developing a beautiful heart.
  • Don't cause your brother to stumble.
  • Avoid the comparison trap.

True threads aren't the measure of a woman, but if you are wanting men to know you for your intelligence then a woman needs to make sure that her "threads" aren't giving him the wrong idea as to what kind of "book" he is getting ready to read.

Good points. It is hard to find modest fashions in this day and age.

Great article. I think many women don't understand that men are more visually stimulated than we are. Who can blame them for staring when a woman lets it all hang out? I don't think there's anything wrong with dressing to show off your best features, but it's not necessary to show skin to do that!

I liked your first point, it reminds me of memoirs of a geisha were she gets the man to fall off his bike with a glance.

I agree with what you said here. A lot of women lament that men are dogs and only want one thing, but don't they realize how they're presenting themselves to the world? You're more likely to receive unwanted attention if you dress immodestly.

Great topic. I get so angry that women get upset with men that stare at their breast, yet have them so exposed, I stare as a female....hoping one of those puppies don't fall out!

Wow, Christine! That might be taking modesty a bit too far.

I had a friend who went to missionary school. They had a dress code that women's tops had to reach the top of the hips, so as not to tempt the men. Most of them work loose smock type tops. There were people in the area who thought it was a home for unwed mothers.

Well-written article.

Well written and thoughtful article. Whether or not a person agrees with your point of view... it is clear what your convictions are and where you stand and that deserves a measure of respect.

I agree that Christian women should dress modestly so that they do not stumble others. Sophie
