An Affordable and Effective Website Builder …But You'll Need Some Patience
Last December, I built my own website using WebSite Tonight 3.0 from Godaddy.com. I first heard of Godaddy.com from a book about starting a writing business. I’d already been running a writing and editing business for 2 years; now I wanted to expand the business beyond my local area, and obviously I’d need a website in order to do that. I was surprised and thrilled to discover that there was such a thing as a do-it-yourself website; I thought the only options were purchasing and learning a program like FrontPage or hiring someone to build a site for me, and I couldn’t readily afford either at the time.The book which mentioned Godaddy.com claimed you could build a simple, attractive website for about $70; I didn’t quite believe that it could be so inexpensive. But when I checked out Godaddy.com for myself, I was astounded at how many different features they offered and how inexpensive the basics options were. Through WebSite Tonight, I could choose from among nearly 700 templates, then fill in the preset “content blocks” with copy and images. I wouldn’t have to learn HTML; I could simply type the copy in plain English.
I was sold. I bought my domain name (for 1 year), a Web-based e-mail account (also for 1 year), and my first month of the 5-page WebSite Tonight 3.0 Economy Plan, all in the same transaction. Because I bought other products at the same time, the domain name was just $2, bringing the total to about $17. The Economy Plan, which included access to the website building software as well as hosting, cost $5 per month. I would spend about $70 to have my website up-and-running for a full year, just as my writing-business book had claimed.

This comment by Betty accurately mirrors my experience with two different attempts at websites, spaced about 3 yrs apart -- using WEBSITE TONIGHT. What a piece of crap! I kept thinking I was just stupid or something, but now I realize that it is incredibly NOT user friendly and its servers must be overloaded or something, because sometimes it works --- and sometimes it doesn't. I wish I had never spent the money!

I purchased a website building program from GoDaddy in 2006 called Website Complete Deluxe. I also purchased the Traffic Builder, the optimizer, the privacy program, 5 domains names (I wanted to protect my domain with this new website that I was about to publish)and all of the bells and whistles plus a 5-year hosting package. Remember, this was marketed for people with very little to no technical experience and you could build it "in a night." I also did not think I could build it in a night but I did think I would be able to build it.
Well after 1 year of trying, I gave up.
When Microsoft starting offering its free Office Live websites, I was able to build one there and gained more experience with building sites. It took me about a month to do it.
So this year, now 3 years after the initial GoDaddy purchase, I started trying again to build this website.

Godaddy's website tonight is absolutely horrible. It loads really slowly and often there will be error messages and pages will not show fully. It is the one of the worst interface I ever used. I will not suggest people using it to build their websites.

From what I've been able to use, Website Tonight's builder program is absolutely horrible. I have found no way to modify heading positions at all, which is horribly frustrating, not to mention body text positions can only be widened side to side.. Also, there are very few fonts available, none of which are scripts, only plain looking crap you see everywhere. I had to create transparent text images using photoshop just so I could avoid using the terrible fonts.

Website Tonight is absolutely horrible. The interface is slow, many features don't work, and the templates are not nearly as customizable as I thought they would be. I will definitely not be using this software ever again.

I've used Website Tonight for several websites the first one as far back as 2005. When version 3.0 first came out, I thought it was a step backwards and I quite using it for a while. I just gave Website Tonight another try for a site that will be maintained by someone with little experience. I'll have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It now approaches the capabilities of Front Page and Dreamweaver with it's ability to switch between a design view and a HTML view. I purchased it from http://GoWebsite.com
