Sugar gliders made their way into the media not so long ago, when Paris Hilton was discovered to have had one. These marsupials have become a very popular exotic pet choice among Americans, mainly due to their cute appearance and small bodies. Here, we will take a much closer look at some of the things that you should be sure to take into consideration before choosing to adopt a sugar glider as an exotic pet.

Most Sugar Gliders Have Very High Energy Levels

If you are used to having pets with low to medium energy levels, then perhaps you should do a little bit more research before deciding to adopt a sugar glider as an exotic pet. Sugar gliders are known to have very high energy levels. Some compare the amount of energy that they have to that of a chinchilla, but they really have a whole lot more energy than the type of pets that people would normally adopt. If you are used to having pets which do not require a lot of energy, then owning a sugar glider may take some adjusting to for you. At the same time, however, the good thing about sugar gliders and the amount of energy that they have is that they are often content with occupying themselves. Unlike dogs with high energy levels, they do not really require you to exercise them when they need it.

Sugar Gliders Have Incredibly Sharp Teeth and Nails

If you think that your cat has really sharp teeth and nails, then you obviously have not yet met a sugar glider. Since sugar gliders are such small creatures that are meant to live in a natural habitat where they are constant prey to larger animals, it is no surprise that they have such sharp teeth and nails. Do they use them? Well, that really depends. Although most sugar gliders are not considered to be the most aggressive animals, there may be some situations in which they may feel afraid in their environment and use their teeth and nails as a means of protection. This can be a problem if you have pets or small children, who may not realize that they are causing a sugar glider to feel frightened. Their sharp nails can be a problem if they climb throughout the house, but they can be trimmed.

You Will Need to Keep Your Sugar Glider on a Strict Diet

I think I'll just capture and train the mice that have invaded us...Lord knows I can't train our cats that have befriended them.

Oh my gosh, it is so small it would be sure to get lost in my house - five kids and a ton of toys, sports gear etc - not to mention a dog, cats, rabbit, parrots LOL

Oh, that photo is adorable! I always wanted one and begged my parents to let me have one but they were wise. Taking care of a sugar glider is not to be considered lightly. Good article, well-written, focusing on proper care. Thanks!
