Facebook, one of the most popular social networking sites second only to MySpace, is reportedly suing a Canadian based Internet porn company for trying to obtain users' personal data.Apparently, the porn company used automated "bot" scripts to make over 200,000 requests for personal information stored on Facebook's site. Facebook did not say if any information was actually collected, but they did admit that many error messages were generated by the scripts.
Hacking attempts like this one are initiated thousands of times every few minutes on the Internet. The only difference in this particular attempt is that the perpetrator got caught, and the victim is trying to do something about it.
What can you do to protect your privacy? Really there is no fool proof way to ensure that your personal information will never be compromised. That being said, there are a few steps that you can take to make it harder for others to see what you don't want them to see.
Learn
Take the time to educate yourself about Internet safety. Take a class if you have to. Be prepared. Try to learn as much as you can about the tricks that hackers use to get to your information.
Change
Change your usernames and passwords frequently. This is the single most important thing that you can do to protect your personal information. Even on sites like Associated Content, you should change your password often.
Hide
Hide your usernames and passwords. Don't keep them lying around in your desk at work, or someplace where they can be seen by prying eyes. If you throw away a piece of paper that has personal information on it, make sure you shred or tear it up first. Be very careful about who you share your usernames and passwords with.
Choose
Choose the sites that you visit wisely. Certain types of sites, like Facebook and MySpace, are a big candy store for not only predators, but hackers as well. If you choose to use the services of these kinds of sites, understand the risks. Bots are running right now as you read this article attempting to mine information from sites all over the web.
