New Orleans is not the only place to join in on the Mardi Gras Celebrations. San Diego has it going on just as strong without all of the dangers, unsavory characters, violence and confusion. Sure Mardi Gras in New Orleans is said to be a once in a life time experience, but I would rather party where I don't have to worry about my safety, or spend a lot of money on travel expenses. I can enjoy Fat Tuesday in my own neck of the woods and save some money. The Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego becomes Bourbon Street for the February 5 celebration. 2008 will mark the 12th year the Mardi Gras event has taken place in the Gaslamp Quarter. The Gaslamp event is fully contained with security and only those 21 and over will be admitted. The event includes a parade and block party events all within security gates
The Gaslamp Quarter event features a masquerade parade and a festival. Starting this year there will actually be two parades one beginning at 7:30 p.m. and the next at 10:00 p.m. for twice the fun. There will also be stages with live music, Cajun food, dancing in the streets, entertainment lounges and of course those famous beads. This event will start at 6 p.m. until midnight with three gates entrances. The cost to attend is $15 if tickets are purchased in advance and $20 at the gate.
Parking is sure to be a bear in the downtown San Diego area so; the Gaslamp event is centrally located to the trolley stops. Parking outside of downtown and taking the trolley to the Gaslamp event may be more convenient, if not plan sensible.
For more information on this event go to: www.gaslamp.org or call 619-233-5227.
