Formed in August of 1973, in Arcata, California, the club focuses on helping handicapped persons - and their families - discover travel in a whole new light. You'll meet with other families interested in the cause of creating more handicapped-accessible vehicles, tourist sites, and camping facilities.
If you own an RV you'll be even more intrigued by the club. They have lists of all the places you want to go, and how they have modernized their facilities to accommodate the handicapped person. They also have rallies where you can meet families with similar interests, discuss ways to encourage various facilities to offer more accommodations to the handicapped, or to just hang out and have fun.
Although the name of the club suggests their overall interest, anyone can join, handicapped or not. Originally formed to assist the handicapped with travel, the club eventually decided to include non-handicapped persons who have an interest in the handicapped and travel.
Dues are required by members with the monies going to cover postage, forms, and similar expenses. Dues are kept to a minimum so that they're easily affordable for members.
Currently there is a huge rally planned for September 24 - 28, 2008, at the Guadalupe RV Resort on Hwy 27 in Kerrville, Tx. The camp out-type of rally is pet-friendly and will feature a Chinese auction, shuffleboard and horseshoes, along with other games and festivities. If you don't own an RV there are local hotel accommodations with fair prices.
At The Handicapped Travel Club web site you'll find lists of RV dealers, lists of places which rent RV's, RV conversion dealers and many other resources.
