Native to India, the Rampur Dog has been around since antiquity. These sight hounds were used to hunt tigers, panthers, jackals, leopards, and lions. Related to the Sloughi, the Rampur Dog was left untouched until the 1800s, when British settlers introduced the English Greyhound. This cross led to a refined animal which was capable of great speeds. It gained a new role in life-that of game courser. Today it is one of the last three indigenous Indian breeds. The Rampur Dog is rarely seen outside homeland.

The Rampur Dog has a broad, wedge-shaped skull with a elongated muzzle which tapers off to a point. Its almond shaped eyes are large, and vary in color. These dogs have small, triangular ears that are somewhat pendulous. The neck is long, and slender. Its overall body appearance is rangy with a deep chest, and long well boned legs. Its whip like tail is held straight out when the dog is alert.

Independent, loyal, and hopelessly devoted the Rampur tends to be a one man dog. This breed adapts quickly to new situations, and is known for its fearless nature. They are incredible gently towards children, and get along with animals they were raised with.

One interesting quirk common to the Rampur, is a rather volatile game tactic. Two hounds will run towards one another, and ram their chests together. Upon seeing this, many individuals may assume its an aggressive gesture, however to dogs its just another way to have fun.

Unlike many greyhound breeds, the Rampur is obsessively protective of its family, and makes a superb guard dog. These gentle creatures turn into intimidating, aggressive obstacles towards anything or anyone which threatens their family . The Rampur tends to be reserved towards strangers.

Known for its tireless nature, the Rampur has great stamina and endurance. They need to be vigorously exercised daily, and are ill-suited for apartment life. These hounds need a large yard where they can easily stretch out into a full run.
