Whether you're a single girl in the big city, or just a stay at home mom who's out running errands at all hours of the day, there are some important items you always need to keep with you as you venture out on the road. Driving alone puts you at risk for many dangers and accidents, and if you're not exactly 'automotive-friendly,' you may end up as a damsel in distress. Avoid being a victim of a car-related incident or other dangers while you're on the road with some simple safety tips. Here are six things you should always have in your car no matter what:
1. Pepper spray. This isn't just for college students heading off to a party late at night; pepper spray can help protect you from intruders who find their way into or near your car without you realizing it. Keep a small can of pepper spray in your glove compartment or the front side door---anywhere that you can reach it easily at a moment's notice.
2. A working flashlight. If you get stuck in a ditch or lost in the boonies during your travels, you'll need as much light as possible to help you see clearly at night.
3. A car emergency kit. These are readily available in convenient bags and satchels, and contain everything you need in case of a breakdown or emergency. Look for kits that contain tools for changing a flat, an emergency road sign, flares, and the equipment to jumpstart your car. These can fit neatly into the trunk of your car or passenger seat. Also make sure you know how to use every piece of equipment in the bag; an actual emergency is not the right time to read up on Lighting a Flare 101.
4. Blankets and sleeping bags. In case of a winter breakdown or any emergency that leaves you stranded, you'll need to stay warm. If the car heater stops working when it won't start, you might not have anywhere to go; make sure your car is stocked with at least one sleeping bag, a blanket, and maybe even some mittens. Non-perishable foods are another important stock-up item.
