If you will be doing your own taxes, but are not comfortable doing them with just pen and paper, then there is an alternative to paying a professional to prepare your taxes, thanks to tax preparation software. Two major brands of tax preparation software are Intuit's TurboTax and H & R Block's TaxCut. Since there are many versions of both TurboTax and TaxCut to serve different taxpayer needs and circumstances, I will be examining the most commonly used versions, which are in this case TurboTax Deluxe with Federal and State E-Filing and its TaxCut equivalent, TaxCut Premium + State + E-File, both Internet downloads. I have selected these programs and services for comparison because they will most likely meet the needs of most individuals. Although both programs are for preparing taxes, they differ in some respects.

Price:

Both comparable products are priced differently. TurboTax Deluxe comes standard with a Federal and State return for $44.95.[1] However, that price does not include E-File, which is $17.95 per return.[2] Thus, assuming that you will file both a Federal and State return electronically, you will end up paying $80.85.[3] The comparable product from TaxCut, TaxCut Premium + State + E-File, costs $69.95,[4] resulting in a savings of $10.90.

Winner: TaxCut Premium + State + E-File.
