The Raiders will have the No. 3 or 4 pick in April's NFL draft, depending on a coin flip with Atlanta - both boasting 4-12 records from 2007. The Raiders have a number of offensive weapons with Jerry Porter, Ronald Curry, Lamont Jordan and Zach Miller. Oakland sunk tons of money into Jamarcus Russell in 2007, so drafting another top-5 signal caller is definitely out in 2008. The defense has some good, young pieces like pass rusher Derrick Burgess, Thomas Howard and Michael Huff. The draft will give the Raiders the opportunity to fill their biggest need areas of offensive line, linebacker and defensive tackle.

The Raiders are in a great position to fill those needs with the 2008 draft. Those positions are some of the deepest this year. In the top-5, the Raiders will have one of these players available to them: Glenn Dorsey, Jake Long, Keith Rivers, Brian Brohm, Matt Ryan and Darren McFadden. Obviously, the two quarterbacks are out. If the Raiders had all of them available, they would probably choose Dorsey. Unfortunately, Dorsey will be snagged by St.Louis if Miami passes on the mammoth defensive tackle. Darren McFadden would be the best player available - and you never know with Al Davis wanting to make that instant impact. With the Raiders struggles with pass protection over the past few seasons, it would take prescription drugs for Oakland to pass on a franchise tackle like Jake Long. Keith Rivers a wild card because Raiders need another play-maker in the front seven on defense. The Raiders take Jake Long in the 1st round.

The Raiders sure up the offensive line with another tackle in the 2nd round, either Gosder Cherilus (Boston College) or Carl Nicks (Nebraska). Jamarcus Russell now has a chance to have some success in 2008. Lamont Jordan and Jerry Porter send Al Davis a thank you card in late April. In the 3rd round, Oakland targets a linebacker - Virginia Tech's Vince Hall or Maryland's Erin Henderson. Rounds 4 and 5 give the Raiders and opportunity for cornerback Chevis Jackson (LSU), wide receiver Mark Bradford (Stanford) and speedy defensive tackle James McClinton (Kansas).

I would agree this article was not written by someone who has a clear vision of what the Raiders needs are...But the raiders needs are way too many to overlook any talented player, so from top to bottom they need to take the best available and hopefully get it right. Al Davis is notorious for drafting bad players in the early rounds and ...some good selections in the later rounds, so it is my hope that this year he allows the scouting team to do its job and maybe we can get lucky more often than not. Thats the best we can hope for...that and perhaps Al will pack his bags and move to a retirement home.

This article is way off. Was this written by an expert? Jordan and Porter are gone. No way the Raiders would pick an OT with the 1st pick. Certainly not the 1st and 2nd round picks. That's absurd. The most glaring need is D-line. The Raiders need a big time D Tackle to stop the run, so if Dorsey is available he is the pick. If he goes prior to the Raiders pick, and McFadden is available, the Raiders should try to trade out. Otherwise, take Ellis, the DT from USC. 2nd round the Raiders can select the best player available at DE, WR or OL. I lean towards a DE that you could free up Burgess to get after the QB.

My opinion is da raiders should go d-line with first pick. Then 2nd pick o-line or wideout, they cant stop run or protect any of the qb's last season so thats how we have to begin our draft if we dont get any of this in FA. Also with however many other picks we have i'm not sure I think we have a 4,5,6,7 correct me if i'm wrong, but I would like to get help with the DE,S,ST,CB. I feel we should resign fargas let bush play and say are farewells to porter and jordan.

I agree with others that Jordan and Porter are out of here. The Raiders will re-sign Fargas OR keep Rhodes and groom Michael Bush at RB. If McFadden falls to Raiders, hopefully they trade pick. Their main need is OT and DL and WR - and need to get as many of these guys as possible. Anyone see how Barry Sims (purposely?) let his man run free and blind-side Russell on his last play of the season? Time for him to go!

Just want to comment on goldenraider remark. I think the Raiders might get a comprehensive 3rd or 4th round pick because of the Randy Moss trade, prior to a rule pass 3 to 4 years ago by the NFL. If this is true, they can get that speedy DT McClinton out of Kansa or a wide out. I doubt they are going to waste a "Top 5" pick on another offensive lineman, who could take 3 to 4 years to develop like Gallery did. Plus, they'll have to trade down to get Ellis. Seeing how they'll have tons of cap money, their best move is to sign Fargas, get experience lineman on offense and defense, and if they Chris Long and Dorsey go 1... 2... like it's planned, DRAFTED MCFADDEN!!!!!

anyone want to mention the raiders don't have a 3rd or 5th round pick??? mcfadden in the first

Wow! No mention of C Long!?! They kid can play 3 different DL positions, has no quit and is ranked very high by most experts. NTM he's Howie's Kid!! No way we take J. Long as our 1st pick. This draft is littered with solid OT in later rounds and St Louis will grab him over Dorsey as their OL is a sieve right now and Pace is injury prone & getting old. Also after the Gallery debacle, no way Al doesn that again. The first pick will be Dorsey if he falls to us or either Ellis from USC or C Long unless we sign a couple of FA's first. Why you even mention Rivers is beyond me, he's not mentioned as a top 5 pick in any articles or mock drafts I've seen for the last month and we're stacked at LB. If there's a wild card it will be one of the RB's and if we sign FA DL it will be more likely we gamble on Dmac or Stewart or Charles or Rice. But you never know,Al & Kiffin could surprise everyone and trade down. Also as previously stated in the two posts ahead of me. Porter and Jordan are

Spell check..figure it out. Porter and Jordan wont be back, but wasting a pick on a WR at the top of the draft would be a horrible decision. They do have good young RB's, but it is not in Lamont Jordan, it's Bush and Fargas . Most important positions to draft would DT, OT, WR, SS (assuming they move Huff to FS), C, and DE, in that order. I'm hoping Dorsey falls, but if he doesnt, I hope they take the DT out of USC. Hopefully they get an improvement on Wr through Free Agency. I doubt they would take a LB in the third round. Morrison and Howard do a great job and they could use Robert Thomas again or find a new SOLB in FA.

Not a bad article, but way off the mark with the first pick. I seriously doubt Jordan or Porter will be with the Raiders next season. And with the vast improvement on the O Line I fully expect the Raiders to draft the best WR they can with their first pick. Jamarcus will need someone to throw to, someone that will pose a credible threat (last year's receiving core was a joke) to stretch out opposing defenses. After that - you're article sounds good and addresses their needs, but more than anything this team needs continuity and a few proven free agents that know how to hustle and win. Assuming Jamarcus does his homework, 2008 should be a Lion-esque season for the Raiders.
