Standardized Tests are standard practice for children in public school. However, that varies for children in private schools or in home schools. Some are required to take a state-mandated test, while others are not. Here we will look at the question of whether students should be required take a standardized or mandated test, such as the TAKS (Texas) or the CSAP (Colorado).

The first issue with the standardized test is of its relevance. There are a large variety of curricula available for both home school and public school and they are not all the same. While they all are generally centered around the basic requirements, there is other material covered that will not be covered in the state-mandated test. Some home school families, and also traditional schools, choose to write or design their own curriculum, following state guidelines, but many times inserting a great deal of extra assignments. Again, this will not be covered in the state test.

It is true that the teacher (or home school parent) can issue their own test for these lessons and often do, but why should a child have to take extra tests to prove his or her abilities? If it was all included in one test, it would be much more indicative of abilities (or lack thereof). Students definitely need to be tested on their skills. However, I'm not sure a large generalized test is the appropriate way to do so.

Instead, I feel that unit tests should be given in every subject at the end of each study increment. Then, an end-of-the-year test that focuses around what the child learned can be given. For instance, if a child is learning about animal reproduction in Science, once that instruction is complete, the child should be tested on that. Children should be tested upon all they learn to ensure they retain the knowledge. The end-of-the-year test should focus on what was actually learned. A standard test is not sufficient to provide that kind of detailed testing, in my opinion. It only gives a small idea of the child's performance, given the fact that it has to try to match an entire state full of various curricula and study materials.

Did You Know?
Because of the variety of teaching methods and curricula, there are now so many ways to solve problems that not all children will always be using the same format, even when they are taught a variety of ways to solve one problem.

Wow-great topic and a lot of interesting ideas!

That's one of the gripes I have with them as well. Many teachers have the same issue. Then, students lose out on learning some things.

This is a very interesting topic. Great job with the article. My mom is a teacher and she always gripes about getting students ready for these because she ends up teaching exactly what is on them versus a well rounded curriculem. She feels stiffled at times.

Thanks for sharing Lynne. As you can see, I also believe there needs to be some reform in the testing process. When one of my daughters was struggling in school, the best they could do for her was to put her in a class that prepared for the test. It taught her nothing but fact memorization. however, soon after the test, she had forgotten the facts anyway and still didn't know how to do the actual work. Now we home school and she's ahead and the subject she used to struggle in (math) is her favorite. I test the kids still, but I don't stress them out over it.

It's good to see a dialogue about standardized testing. I've had real issues with my state's standardized tests. My children are in public schools, and it seems that all year the teachers are more concerned with preparing for the end-of-year state-mandated tests than they are in my children's actual learning. It's very frustrating! We need real reform!!!

Wow Kelly. Bribing is definitely no good when it comes to grades or tests. How sad. As for just filling in any answer, I can remember friends doing that when I was younger, too, so I imagine it still goes on.

I'm not convinced standardized testing means anything. I remember taking state tests every year and I would just go through the pamplets and fill in whatever answer was available because I knew it didn't count against my grade and I wasn't going to bother with worrying about the tests. Nowadays the testing makes more stress for teachers who then put that stress on the kids. Our local highschool tried bribing the kids with off campus passes if they did well on the tests. I say they are nothign but political blackmail tools.

Thanks for sharing you three. Great points, Kelly. :-)

Nice piece. I taught 3rd grade in VA for two years, the first year that the kids took the SOLs. I despised them...they were so stressful for the teachers, and weren't an accurate reflection of what the children learned. I do think, though, that if they are going to be required of some students, they should be required of all students. But I'd really like to see them disappear...or get fixed to better measure what the children learn.

I think these tests are not perfect for everyone... There should be more options for different types of learners.

I believe that all students should be given the same tests. This would be the best way to gauge just how badly some schools are doing. Many times it's not the student, but rather lackluster teaching, that's to blame for kids being "bored of education".

Thanks for clearing that up about the home school testing Heather. freakmamma, don't feel bad. For some reason, many people are under the misconception that every homeschooled child is required to take a test, but it isn't true for all states. Each state has different rules and laws. Where I am, it isn't required but we do it anyway; mainly for record-keeping purposes and as affirmation for friends and family. It's kind of something the kids can use to "show off" their knowledge, so to speak. LOL Heather, you gave some more great ideas there. Thanks again. :-)

I would think making the SAT more like the baccalaureate that France offers could be beneficial. The French do not take end of the year exams; they take one large exam at the end of their schooling that tests them only on the classes they took. I don't think that's a good idea, to have just ONE test that you take when you are totally finished with schooling. However, I think if we had midterms and end of the year exams, but made the SATs so that they tested individuals on the classes they took (or just the mandatory ones by state?), it would be better for everyone.

Not all states require end of the year testing for homeschooled students. In fact, most do not. Some states require no standardized testing at all, and the standardized testing that is required is usually only given once every few years. In many states if you are homeschooling with a religious organization there is very little, if any, testing.

Homeschoolers have to do an end of year test, it would make sense that it would be an "across the boards" type thing for all areas of education in order to advance to the next grade.
