Organizations today must maintain a competitive edge even more so now than they did in the past. As projects in an organization become more complex, additional people are needed to complete the projects in a timely manner. Individuals that are working towards the same goal and have similar experienc
e for that project are grouped together to form a team. Teams can be effective if they are managed correctly and the goals are communicated effectively.

Interpersonal skills are very important when there is a large group of individuals working together. Just to name a few, sufficient etiquette, conflict management, listening skills, negotiating, leadership, and valuing diversity are interpersonal skills. In order to build a sufficient cohesion into a team, everyone must trust each other. Once this is established everyone will contribute their interpersonal skills. One individual may possess greater leadership skills than the rest of the group therefore they will be the leader. Another individual may possess greater knowledge in one specific part of the project therefore, they will complete that part. Individuals all have different interpersonal skills that they can contribute to the team.

As I mentioned above, sufficient etiquette, conflict management, listening skills, negotiating, leadership, and valuing diversity are interpersonal skills. Proper etiquette will ensure a more stable working environment for everyone. Conflict will always be an issue but can be managed with proper interpersonal skills. Listening is also a very important interpersonal skill to utilize in a group setting. In a team environment there will be times when one individual is waiting on another individual to do his/her part before they can complete their part. This waiting period may become frustrating but the individuals need to utilize proper communication to communicate what they need finished. Conflict could arise when an individual feels like they are limited to a certain task. Listening skills will come into play in this type of situation. These are just a few of reasons why interpersonal skills are so important.
