The purpose of window treatments is to make the most of a window by concealing poor views or enhancing great views. There are different window treatments for every style, taste, and function. While window treatments are of course made for windows, there are other places you can use them too. Here are some ideas for window treatments without windows.

Doorways: Traditionally, doorway draperies (also called portieres) were used to create privacy where there was not a door. These days, however doorway draperies are used purely for decorative purposes. To create a portiere in your doorway, you need to purchases any window treatment of your choice that looks the same from both sides and you can buy two of the same treatment and put them back to back. Depending upon the weight of the fabric, you can install your window treatment in your doorway on a tension rod or track hardware.

Accent Walls: If you ever want to create an accent, wall in a room but do not want to paint or wallpaper, consider installing a full wall curtain rod and hanging the window treatment of your choice. You can do one layer of any sheer to upholstery fabric, or you can do a multi layer treatment with sheer on the bottom and luxurious or rich fabric on top. Tiebacks will create dept in the window treatment design.

Add luxury or romance to a room. If you ever watched the version of Romeo and Juliet from the 1980's you will remember that Juliet's room was completely draped with fabric. I am sure that the reason was that it was necessary in castles to use fabric to soften and warm a room. The additional affect was that the room was luxurious and intoxicatingly romantic. To create a similar look, you can install thin wood strips around the top of the entire room to which you can attach the fabric using staples. Of course, you would have to add a trim to cover the staples. Another option is to attach the window treatment using Velcro.

Soundproof a room: Using the idea mentioned above will also soundproof a room. The more the fabric is gathered the more it will muffle sound. You will also want to buy heavier curtains for better soundproofing.
